We just got back from a trip to Emerald Isle in our car (bus wasn't ready yet)
We had a blast and now are planning next years trip.
We want to head out mid September again and take US 158 to Kitty Hawk and then take the NC SR12 down to US 70 and then onto SR 58 etc ending up on SR 87 into Southport.
Basically follow the coast after most of the tourist's have left
Ferries don't look like a problem and camping doesn't seem to be an issue along the way
We plan to stay 5 or 6 days along the coast
Big question is:
Is SR 12 doable in a bus?
The ferries have rates etc for 40ft RV's and ours is 35ft
Anybody done this route recently?
We relize hurricane season can affect the route
TIA

A couple of years ago we stayed at Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe. We go there by going the southern route and taking the ferry at Cedar Island. It is a 2 1/2 hour ride and we had no problems. We were in a 40 foot Eagle towing a Honda Pilot. With the bikes on the back of the car we were 64 feet and 6 inches and the limit is 65 feet. We also took the smaller ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras Island and they gave us one whole side of the ferry.
It is well worth the ride!!!
Doug,
Uh, there is no such thing as NC SR12. That would be NC 12 period. Our SR designations are for "Secondary Road" with a four digit number following the SR. Our State primary routes are designated as NC followed by up to three numbers. Of course as fast as we are redesignating secondary routes to NC primaries we may be making them with four digits now too.
Seriously, the Holiday RV Resort is a good place to stay on the south end of NC 12. It is on the ocean front and has become increasingly more popular every year. I'd try to avoid it during a long holiday weekend. Too many, too close, to relax.

I always thought the square white signs were SR (state route/secondary route) and the white "shields" were US hiways and of course red/white/blue "shields" are Interstates, anyways same roads...
I have noted the camp hatteras, thanks!
so where is the holiday rv resort, google brings up the park on emerald isle...
which we checked out since we stayed next door at the islander suites and have it marked for a few days.
Thank you for all the help so far
