Well, I taped over the vent and found out for sure why it is there at the expense of five quarts of Dextron in 3000 miles and some weird shifting!!
Needless to say it is open for the upcoming 2500 miles to home!
After finding that the trans is leaking about a quart every 500 mi or so I found that the bottom trans bolt to the engine was too short and was loose. Tried to insert a new, longer bolt and found it wouldn't screw in even though the hole is about 1.5" deeper than the old bolt. Also found traces of stripped out thread metal.
Any ideas on how to get a 3/8" NC bolt into this old hole? It is about 5' deep and none of my taps will reach this far. I'm assuming it is Al so I need to be careful. I know a helicoil would be best but that will require removing the trans, not an easy thing for me.

Maybe?? Try searching for extended tap 3/8 NC
Scott,
Thanks!
