Title: Bottle Jack with gauge
Post by: Cary and Don on August 23, 2012, 05:29:22 PM
Somewhere there was discussion on using a bottle jack with a gauge to determine the weight of you axles.  We came across this site on how to make one.

I can see a lot of jacks bought at HF because that hole match up is going to be a bugger to do. LOL

Sure beats driveing to your local CAT scales and weighing for 9 bucks does'nt it??>>>Dan

I think for a 100 bucks I would buy the jack with gauge port that looks likes work lol,now the gauge cost more than the jack from the jack x change go figure

the jack with the gauge setup is being discussed for the purpose of using it while indexing bogies on an eagle. Unless I am mistaken, I beleive the bogies are indexed individually. Driving over a truck scale will give you total weight of both bogies together, but not each side individually. You need to have both bogies within a certain weight. Using a truck scale it would be possible to have one side say 1,000 over and the other side 1,000 under.

The CAT scales near me is a three platform scale, first is apprx. 10X10, second is 10X20 third is 10X40. laid out in a line with six inches between platforms.
Useing this setup, you may approch from any angle and weigh as little as one wheel to within one pound or any combination.>>>Dan

i do know you should buy the bigger bottle jack.  trying to lift 6T with an 8T jack is still difficult.  Laying down, i couldn't get enough leverage on it under the front axle.  i should have paid the extra for the 20T.

i think they are accurate with the bogies on an eagle, but not just trying to find the weight on the front axle.  i could not get the weight to come close enough to what the cat scale said.

It also depends on how far inboard from the center of the tire you place the jack.  The further in, the more weight will be on the jack.

No Tom you should have bought the 12 ton lol Len they have attachment you lift from the outside with the wheel on remove the lug nuts and the attachment bolts to lug bolts.
Jim (rv safety)  does it by lifting on the axle and makes it work but he uses his engineering math, for dummies like me we have to use the attachment and the formula in the book

good luck
