Is there any simple way to distinguishing a Detroit Diesel 6V92 silver from a pre-silver? Would a pre-silver be called a "green"?
To be certain, I would try calling your local Detroit dealer with the serial number and they should be able to tell you the history of the motor. (At least they can with Series 60. Maybe 6V92s are too old for the database.)

6V92 DD Silver engines began with the serial number F83425 any number after that is a Silver engine.
8V92 DD Silver engines began with the serial number F73594 any number after that is a Silver engine.
These began in 1982
Is that serial number thing true regardless of whether it's a 92N, 92T, TA, TT, TTA or DDEC? ???
Yes
;)
Oops! If it's a DDEC you would know it's newer than '82, wouldn't you?

Not necessarily. I blame it on AGE.
What's so special about a silver motor?
Just Detroit's expression for the engine that had the upgrades from original that made it a better engine. An older engine can be upgraded to Silver statis. Good Luck, TomC
