Title: SITE PROBLEMS
Post by: boxcarOkie on August 11, 2012, 11:41:30 AM
This site is getting extremely hard to load, and on some days will not even allow you to read the posts.  Often you have to backdoor it and go another route, just to read it, and only half of it is there.  Other days it just spins, and spins, and eventually, you just shut it down and go somewhere else.

Someone really need to do something about this before it crashes completely.

I get the "Connecting" spinning circle for maybe 6-8 seconds some time but it is almost never more than that.  I just guessed that it was with my innerweb provider.

Several folks have PM'ed me on it, and I got to thinking about what it was they are saying, so I cleared out the cache feature on my browser for the last four weeks.  It appears that might have been the problem, it has settled down now.

Open the pod doors Hal ... Open the pod doors.

The Apple doesn't seem to like the site it will load but slow then some days it is fine

I have not had any particular problems loading the site.  These computers end up storing a lot of trash that can really slow them down.  I suspect that there are deeper things than merely clearing cache and cookies can solve, although that generally helps.  I am currently upgrading my Mac to the new operating system and doing it as a fresh install to hopefully clean out years of crap that I otherwise do not know how to get rid of.  This Windows 7 one am am using now to write this is much faster than the Mac, probably because it a had new, clean install of the operating system just a couple of months back.

I personally have not run into any issues........site loads right up for me.

It's been slower than normal for me for the last few days, on both my brand-new home computer and my archaic work computer.   Sometimes it loads in a jiffy, sometimes it takes many jiffies, occasionally even a kilojiffy or two.   It's still well worth the wait.

There's something wrong with some of the ads that display.  Win 7 gets excited about some of their "security certificates", whatever the he11 those may be.  Beyond that this site loads as fast as my bandwidth at the moment will permit.
Title: Re: SITE PROBLEMS
Post by: rgwilliams on August 12, 2012, 09:21:12 AM
Sporadic speed.  Ranges from .5 second to 20 sec to load, whether it's on the home page or specific topic, new or viewed before.  No commonality that I can discern yet. Always "waiting for bus conversions.com" appears in the progress window (bottom left corner of Firefox), so I know the outbound communication is OK.
Title: Re: SITE PROBLEMS
Post by: belfert on August 12, 2012, 12:57:58 PM
I've seen sporadic issues with speed only the past two days or so.  Nothing as drastic as BCO states he is seeing.  All the pages load completely when they load.  I've not seen any security certificate errors, but certain browsers are more sensitive to things like missing intermediate certificates on the server side.

Although it is not the fastest site, the speed is usually acceptable.  I do get constant warnings about the certificate on my Android phone and this computer with Internet Explorer.

Yep tonight it is really slow. Went out 3 times tried cleaning Cashe etc but nothing, it would warn about Certs and then not open. When it finally opened, it would not let me post and then had to wait to go back to home page. It has been a lot slower lately on Computer, Phone and my Tablet.

I usually don't have any problems with this site, but tonight it is so painfully slow, and page loads keep timing out. Makes you wanna throw the computer out the window.

I'm having the same problems. But don't throw your computer out the window! Lol  I'm only having problems with this site. It's been happening for about a week now. Most of the time, I just give up on this site. It's never a problem with any other forums.

I think I have to retract my previous post about having no issues, which I had not experienced in the past.

Today is another story....board loads extremely slow.

Think I will go mow the yard while my post loads.....LOL
Title: Re: SITE PROBLEMS
Post by: thomasinnv on August 13, 2012, 02:28:37 PM
so bad this morning it takes several tries to load the page. I assume since someone else took over as webmaster it may be safe to say that no one really cares and the problem may or may not be resolved. This very well could be the new "norm". who knows, i'll just go to BNO. At least it loads and the powers that be actually give a ----.

Like Debra used to say to Raymond on Everybody Loves Raymond ... Just so you know.

Two and one-half minutes just to load the page.  This is senior citizen slow for a webpage.

Will the last person to leave BCM/MAK please turn out the lights.

Same as RGW,

"Sporadic speed.  Ranges from .5 second to 20 sec to load, whether it's on the home page or specific topic, new or viewed before.  No commonality that I can discern yet. Always "waiting for bus conversions.com" appears in the progress window (bottom left corner of Firefox)".

Sometimes refuses to go to "Show new replies to your posts."

I play Solitaire while waiting!

Could be Mike is just just tired of paying for bandwidth & getting no returns. If he throttles things down, folks will just drift away.

I certainly hope the problems we are seeing is not a result of a "decision" someone made. There are several free forum hosting sites that would handle this forum just fine. If Mike wants to shut things down that's his perogitive, but the forum could go on at no cost.

I had heard through the grape vine that web hosts have changed. This is something that even the Mods have nothing to do with. It has been terribly slow from where I sit for several days. :-[ :-[

I still enjoy reading all of the recent posts from a lot of new Bus Nuts! ;D

There won't be any new posts soon if something isn't done about the inconsistent speeds although it seems to be somewhat better today.  I'm sure Mike K is trying to cut costs, but he is doing it the wrong way if he really wants to keep the forum running.

I have been on this board since its inception and have always wondered "whats in it for Mike" or whoever owns it.There is no charge to be on here but there is definetely a cost to maintain it. Who pays that cost? Its certainly not the users.

Just wondering.

Revenue is generally made via the advertisers....banner ads, etc and other avenues that prove to be lucrative.

There is  allot of potential, you just have to tap into the right vein....so to speak ;)

Knowing Mikey for years if this board doesn't pay it's own way it will go away he is all business and bottom line that is the reason there is no magazine and it could happen here.

I doubt he will pay anyone to maintain this board if Phil has left

I'm a mere noob around here, but I hardly read and hardly ever post because it's the slowest site I ever browse.  Coming here reminds me of my AOL dial-up days back in the late '80s or early '90s, and I'm on dedicated fiber optic -- the problem isn't on my end.  Guess I need to start hanging out at the other board, in case I ever actually get my rebuild finished.

Cheers, John

Thanks for your patience!

Up until the last week or two the site has always responded very quickly for me.  Nothing like dialup.  A few years back performance got really bad, but the server or something was upgraded and speeds got much better.

Phil, thanks so much for your hard work.  Like many of us, I've moved multiple times, and know what a hassle that is.  For you to take time away from other things, to do this, is even more worthy of our thanks.

QuoteThis site is a joke
Now, THAT was unfortunate.  One of the great features of this site is that we (almost) always treat other members with civility, whether we agree or not.  This is not a "paid membership" site per se.  If I were one of the volunteers working hard to maintain this site, I'd consider that a personal insult.  Unfortunate.

Thanks again, Phil.

Title: Re: SITE PROBLEMS
Post by: Runcutter on August 18, 2012, 03:44:01 PM
Gus, that's only one of the words I was thinking of -- but I edit myself before posting (or emailing, or talking on the phone, etc.).  Considering my words carefully sure seems to help -- I get invited back to places, rather than having folks tell me not to get hit in the rear end by the door.  It would be nice if more people did -- especially people new to a site.  It takes less effort to make a good first impression, than to undo a bad one.

I think Dale Carnegie (How to Win Friends and Influence People) would give up in this internet age -- I can see him getting to the point where he might give a few one-finger salutes.

Phil, the site is much faster now -- and I didn't get the security certificate error this session (first time in weeks).  Thanks for plugging away.  (EDIT - spoke too soon, when I posted this, the security certificate error came up, but I still say "thanks" for your hard work).

Thanks for the support guys!  I do appreciate the constructive criticisms.  I'm aware of a change that was made a couple of weeks ago that I'm trying to track down to see who did want and if I can work around it.  Also, if someone could post the site certificate /ssl error in a post that would be terrific and I'll keep after it time permitting.  There may be some more oddness today as I'm working on the site.

Best Regards, Phil

Clifford, Say what and to think I always respected your knowledge,Firefox has so much more on the security side and operates and has always operated at a much higher level. IE remains way behind the times and always has. IE has so many back-doors either because they came out with it to fast and didn't check enough or because they themselves built them in to it.
I agree that Chrome is good but not great yet. Just my personal opinion
I will always respect your Bus knowledge and political views but I am afraid you lost me on browser views, LOL :D ;D :)
I use 6 different browsers including Safari, Sis,Sis,Sis
