Title: Moblie Hotspot
Post by: Lin on July 28, 2012, 02:32:31 PM
While on the phone with Verizon Tech support about my 3G signal cutting out when I tried using an HDMI cable to watch Netflix on a TV, the support agent suggested I try an application called Foxfi, which produces a wifi hotspot.  We did use it extensively on this trip.  We actually ended up using the hot spot so much that it would have been worth paying Verizon their $30. for the months use, but free seemed even better.  I know they have it with Android on Verizon but am not sure if it is available for iphone or other carriers.

The only suspicion is that there is no advertising, so one wonders where and how Foxfi is making their money.  I did find that the application seems to remain open even after you disable the wifi.  I would therefore manually shut it down when not in use.

We have it on the I phone with AT&T not Foxfi it's built into the phone that's all we use now the air cards are long gone so is the dsl at home still haven't found any 4G service lol

The new I phones are something when it comes to technology and you pay for it the hot spot cost 20 bucks a month extra watch your bill it won't be long before Verizon catches it

We had the Verizon 5 spot and liked it a lot when we signed up for 3 gigs a month and were told if we went over to just call them and they would re set it for the next month in writing. Then at the end of the month they started sending us updates which in turn put us over and it went from 35.00 a month to 50?  We would call them and tell them about it and they would tell us that they could not put us back to 3 gigs because they changed that policy then the next month it was 5 gigs used? We were not using it all that much. e mail etc, read the boards.
So after we tried it for 6 months and they finally told us to go to a Starbucks and sit out in the parking lot to download the updates for free, we payed them the 160. to get out and be done with them.

We have sprint again and are happy as heck. they told us to just download a tethering app ( Easy Tether, 9.99) on our Galaxy III phones and off we go.

This can work for us since we have unlimited data.  I had heard that there were apps that gave a hotspot but thought that it might be a little corrupt to try to circumvent the pay system that way. However, since this was recommended by their tech department, I don't see a problem.  If they block it, so be it.  I just wanted to pass it on.

My wife enjoyed it so much that we joked that we had found her 3G spot.
