Title: red guarded switch 4106
Post by: agetme on July 27, 2012, 08:03:52 AM
I have a switch panel that has a red guarded switch on . Long shot i know but anybody have any ideas what it controls.
My start switches, headlights, fans, fast idle etc are on the panel also.
Custom stuff so +WAG. The PO did not even know what it was.

Thanks,

Tom H

Could it be your emergency engine kill switch. It is on my 4104.

Could it be your emergency engine kill switch. It is on my 4104.

Once operated, it will cause you no end of difficulty to start the engine, until you go and reset the "stopper" in the engine compartment.

Never tell a child not to touch that switch.

Once operated, there is no indication until a divine inspiration causes you to check the engine shutdown.

I used to drive private coach with three other drivers, so I installed a micro-switch to light up an indicator, in the event someone wondered what that switch was for.

Unless the engine is on the verge of grenading, no one touches that switch under penalty of law.  Excellent advice from PCC.

The PO of my bus installed one that is a Neutral Safety Override Switch.  It allows my Allison trans to be started in gear when holding the switch up.

He also installed a low gear lock switch on most of his busses for climbing grades that would prevent the trans solenoid from upshifting into a high gear and keeping it in the low gear.

Ive never tested that emergency shutdown because Ive heard it can cause blower oil seals to
start leaking. I guess it would be ok to test it with engine not running learn how to re-arm it.

Check it out that is a old wife tell about it blowing the seals on the blower all it does it stop the air above the blower, then blower spins free just like a fan.

Those are a pain to maintain and most people ignore that part the shaft wears out the horn over time and will let dirt in if you have the spring loaded fuel rods (1 screw adjustment) toss the thing and plug the holes

The main purpose for those on the DD was to stop the engine when a injector was stuck on the old 2 screw fuel rods

The 60 series marine engine I have has a air shut off no blower it just cuts the air off in case the 60 series decides to head south lol

That is your high idle switch.   At least that is what it is on mine.   Emergency shut down is a button under a swing cover next to the reverse switch.   Mine is a 1961 4106.

When I had my 8V-71 converted to a turbocharged and air to air intercooled engine, Don Fairchild took out the emergency flapper since, like Clifford said, upgraded to the more modern spring loaded injectors. My 1980 KW with 8V-92TA did not have a emergency shut down either.  The freed up switch and wire was conveniently used to power the solenoid for my radiator misting system.  Just took off the red flip up switch cover and labeled the switch-misters.  The only thing about that switch, at least on my bus, is that the switch is wired hot all the time-not through the ignition switch. Good Luck, TomC

High idle switch on mine also. pd4106-1475.  The book seems to indicate that it only works when the parking brake is engaged. Ed
