Title: ? For The 60 Series Guys
Post by: luvrbus on July 26, 2012, 04:16:00 PM
Ok I have a 14L tier 2 series 60 with a offroad ecm ,825 hp @ 2300 rpm ?  the 15in H20 exhaust back pressure is that number correct seems like a lot to me and what is the reasoning behind that also I am looking for a used jumper harness I don't want to pay Mawk 500 for a new one

This document says that the max should be 3" Hg which is over 40" H20.

My 1996 Series 60 manual says 3" Hg for both the Series 60 and Series 60G Automotive engine - no mention of particulate filters.

My 2005 manual says 3" Hg for the Series 60  with the following at the bottom

* Exhaust systems should provide a maximum of 3.0" Hg during normal service. This applies to exhaust system devices having mufflers and diesel oxidation catalysts. Particulate filter engines may operate above 3.0" Hg specification as long as they do
not exceed established protection alarm limits.

It says 2.4" Hg for the Series 60G Automotive engine.

Not sure what the difference is between a Series 60 and a Series 60G Automotive...
That's all the 60 Series stuff I have - Steve

I found this in the Series 60 and 50, Construction & Industrial, Marine Engines Application and Installation Manual - it shows the effects of air intake temperature and exhaust back pressure on horsepower.

I think G stands for 12.7 I know H stands for 14L on the engine I have this is not a automotive engine it is a MTU marine engine and info is hard to find without a manual and so far WW Williams has not located me one yet and my buddy Cole won't part with one some friend huh lol

I have the installation manual but the parts and maintainence manuals got lost some place this may turn into a nightmare trying to convert it back to a automotive engine

thanks for trying

Clifford have you went thru the parts list comparing the typical truck engine vs this marine engine?   Pistons, rods camshaft, valves???

Yes I have that is why I wanted a marine engine they will stand 650 hp at @ 2300 rpm a little iffy on a regular 14L with those setting you should see the fuel consumption chart on a 14L @825 hp @ 2300 rpm will blow you away

Clifford this is all in jest>>>  Someone must have stolen your laptop..   All these posts about a S60..   And you stepped up to the big 4 stroke..   The Diehard 8V92 fan and big Cat Yellow fan..   C15..    D398  3512..   Regardless, it would be nice to strap that Marine engine in a bus..  CHEERS!!

Zero, just going back with what was removed only with a 14L fwwi this engine is new I bought it from the owner who decided to go with the Cat's C-18  I like all engines they have their place

I would  have loved to replaced the broken 60 series with a C-15 but the Allison parts for a Cat are very, very pricey and a 8v92 will hold it own with the 11L and 12L series 60 the 14L is a different story lol

I need your phone # I know the turbo is not going to work I can not find the model number in any DD book and I am not going to leave the engine at 825 hp it would be fun till the first fuel stop lol

At 825hp, that works out to about 46 gallons an hour.  So if you could gear your bus to 120mph (825hp would be about what it would take to go that fast) you'd be getting 2.6mpg!  Fun to think about.  The only thing-your bus sure will look funny with a radiator the size of the entire rear hanging off the back of the bus to cool that beast.  Good Luck, TomC

You are wrong TomC it's only 42 to 44 gph lol just joking I about passed out when I read the chart 7 gph at idle marine fuel at over 4 bucks a gal at the marina and running 2 of those puppies wow pricey to say the least

7gph at idle?  With the engine in gear, I could believe that-since many of the sportfishers that use that engine report having an idle speed sometimes pushing 8 knots.  Have to run out of the harbor on either one engine or engage the trolling gear. But out of gear should still be only around 1gph.  Good Luck, TomC

Clifford,
Do you have this parts link? It has to be opened in Internet Explorer, not Foxfire or something. You just need your engine serial number.

Thanks Ken I have that link but these silly things have HS or HP in front of the numbers the marine guys did tell me H stood for 14L and S stands for starboard side and the P stands for port side and there is a difference most noticeable is the stater mounting.

When Cole gets back to the USA he will figure it out (I hope lol) both are new engines

I bought these from a barge towing co in Highlands Tx they purchased the 2 new not rebuilt for a tug they were building a few years back and decided they were to light duty and not enough hp for the tug boat lol they were never installed and it was too good of a deal to pass on for the price I paid less for 2 than Wayne paid for his 60 series for his Eagle.

good luck

That is really strange. I think every Series 60 serial number I've looked at starts with 06R0, DDEC II, III, IV or V. Usually the letters that indicate displacement are in the model number.

It is strange Ken they have a 12 digits after the HS or HP not 7 or 10 once I remove all the marine parts there should be a number on the block

Clifford,
This may be of interest to you. It's about replacing the water cooled marine turbo with a dry wrap turbo. It has a turbo part number, but I didn't see anywhere engine size was mentioned.

And here's your DDEC V A and I manual if you don't have one.
