Title: Shell of a deal?
Post by: frontman on July 24, 2012, 04:27:26 PM
I bought by 88 model 15 Eagle 3 years ago and have been doing most of the work myself.  I got a good deal on the bus, paid 10k.  the generator was worth almost what I paid for the bus.  I stuck 5k into the 6V92 and then drove it home to WI from MO.  We took all the metal off and got it down to the tubing and went through and fixed all the rust.  We thought at that point, why not raise the roof?  So we raised the roof 9 inches and got the new caps put on.  I have the upper steel on the body and it's ready for siding on the bottom.  I have many hours and about 30 k invested already but some changes have come along and I need to sell.  I was hoping to get at least 15k for the bus, half of what I have into it.  Does this sound like a good price?  Or should I just try parting it out?   :'(

In all honesty, "it is only worth what you can get for it in today's soft market economy."  Good luck, it is a shame you have to let it go, let's hope it is not to the junk man.

Ugh, sorry to hear.  I think your price is fair, but as BCO notes the economy is putting a lot of downward pressure on things, you'll have to have patience either way you go.

Parting it out can be a slowwwwww, painful process because not only is the economy soft these days, but you don't have total control over which parts will go first.  It depends on how well you can accommodate storage of the bus as parts are pulled off and then determining when to ultimately dispose of it once harvest time is over.  If storage of the bus as it sheds parts is not a problem and you have potentially up to a few years to manage the process across what could be multiple interested parties (and not all of them buyers, a lot of them just asking questions), financially you could come out ahead versus selling.

Take care,
Brad

BCO has it right  ---- Money spent or improvements made mean nothing to the price --- It is only worth what someone will give you for it --- sometimes more to a specialty buyer than the general public.

Thanks so much for your insight guys!  I'm still now sure what I'm going to do with it.  I would love to see someone finish breathing life into this project.  I would love to see her on the road again.

Chad, as folks have said, the market for buses is very soft.

We have many Eagle owners that contact us at http://www.eaglesinternational.net/ (http://www.eaglesinternational.net/) that are thinking about selling their bus.  My advice to them is to take a ton of photos and post them on one of the free photo hosting sites (many of us use photobucket).  You simply can't take too many photos.  If you only have a few photos, some folks will assume you are trying to hide some problem.  Also, a very detailed list of components will help.

If you have documentation on the engine rebuild, that is good.  That said, most folks say the engine was just rebuilt.  As buswarrior is famous for saying, if you don't have the documentation, it was not done ;D

You are welcome to post you bus at http://www.eaglesinternational.net/ (http://www.eaglesinternational.net/).  All you have to do is register.
