Hey guys,
I almost got in the car to pick one of these baby's up. But considering I don't know #%$@ from shinola when it comes to electronics and the fact that JD at C&J coach said it would be ALOT of wiring I decided to continue stalking my elusive repower engine.
Here's the link at ebay

I contacted the seller and he said this was a no-reserve price... 3K for a reliabilt with an alternator, compressor and power steering pump. That's a good deal in my book.
I have no affiliation with the seller, just sharing info.

If that engine was a MUI with 9G90 injectors and federal cams I might pick one up. A DDEC smog engine isn't worth much.
--Geoff
Rick is it a zero time factory Detroit reman? The engine kit is worth that price..
What would you do with a smogged out DDEC IV? It doesn't matter how cheap it is.
--Geoff
Rick, someone is looking out for you those smog engines are little different and who knows they be full of the ceramic crap count your blessing you didn't buy one lol I would not touch one myself
Apparently Clifford and Geoff can tell from the serial number what the internals are ("smog" engine).
I would like to understand what constitutes a smog engine. Clifford mentioned ceramic parts. What else is different?
Certainly the ECM can be reprogrammed, but that may not make much difference if the cams, injectors, or ? would prevent obtaining reasonable performance. At least they are not EGR engines from what I can tell.
Maybe Don Fairchild can comment on the downside of these engines and what would need to be done to make them acceptable.
No way to know what they will end up being sold for, but the current starting bid would sure justify a further glance.
Converting to a DDEC engine would not be a huge deal if you could find a donor bus that would yield the components you need for the conversion (throttle, cable, dash switches, etc.)

They have the smog tag on the engines Jim if it says CARB run, no need to check the model and serial numbers I seen those sell for 500 to 750 never ran except on a dyno
good luck
You guys must know I would NEVER really consider buying a motor without running it by the board... I'm a little slow but I'm not stupid enough to do that twice! One blown up 8V92 later... that seized and broke the chains that held it to the floor and did a somersault in the shop. Yes kids these things can kill you deader than a doornail. Just got home from a 60 mile trip for root beer floats with the neighbors and the wife and kids. Gosh, that's a smooth running bus. Too bad God invented mountains.
Rick
Geoff, couldn't you pull the heads off and drop the pan and replace the pistons and camshafts?
Compared...to let's say a 8V92TI (A?) MUI non smog mill rated at 500 hp. If the price is $right$, (cheap!) are the smog mills still a good deal? The world wonders. HB of CJ (who does not know) :)
As we know, Detroit Diesel had a huge problem with CARB (California's version of the EPA) making the 2-stroke engine meet the newer and tougher smog regulations enacted each year since around the 1990's. The first engines on the chopping block were the engines in the transit system. Then came the trucks and highway buses. Then came the boats and the industrial sector. Now every DD 2-stroke engine in California is banned except personal motorhomes (as of now). The other states will be catching up one of these days.
This engine we are talking about has so many low smog specifications in it that the only parts we might be interested in is the block, crank and accessories. Everything else is specific to meet smog requirements which, we as personal motorhome owners of converted buses, don't have to meet-- or better yet, spend the money to get less performance for more money.
I would register my converted bus in Mexico before I tried to meet the latest EPA standards.

Geoff, Thanks for the reply. Do you know what the cylinder head changes are? In practice could you backdate these engines to a DDEC3, and get by with replacing the pistons and camshafts "only" Can the heads be reconfigured> standard valvetrain?
They use the same heads 5149877 casting 5148543
good luck
