We have a revival near Florence and Lolo, Montana in mid July and we had planned to leave Kansas on the 9th and drive over the next 3-4 days. We have had a change of plans and will probably be free to leave on Monday July 2 from Northeast Oklahoma.
I will probalby go straight north and pick up I-29 near Kansas City and go up through Omaha. We will either turn west on I-90 or continue north and go west on I-94. It is a little farther on I-94 but we have never been to North Dakota and we really want to escape this heat! It was 104 in Miami, Oklahoma today.
Here's the problem. That will be 4th of July week and I imagine finding a place to park along the way might be difficult. I will have the bus and the 24 ft. trailer so I will need a big place with 50 amps.
Anybody have any suggestions for RV parks along I-90 or I-94 that would be worth investigating? We have visted most the major National Parks and such along I-90 so we do not have to park near them but we would not be adverse to it either. Even though these few days will be more resting than sightseeing we do love the scenery and National Parks.
If you have any ideas, thoughts or suggestions I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
DKO
Since the 4th is in the middle of the week this year i doubt if many of the parks will be full or even half full.
94 is a way prettier drive to my mind. Sorry I can't help with RV parks though.
I agree about 94, it was a great big surprise to me to find out ND is so much prettier than SD after years of both flying and driving along 90.
Since we mostly use WM except for about once a week I can't help you much on RV parks.
My experience with State/US parks is most don't have 50 amp and are too far off the highway.
You'll likely be hard pressed to find an RV park with openings in the area of North Dakota where the oil boom is. A co-worker of mine tried to find a hotel room in that area last summer and had to keep on driving as every hotel was full. Many oil workers are living in RVs as they have no other housing available.
I wouldn't think RV Parks would be too much of a problem. If You don't have a Good Sam Directory, get one. It will have all the info you need about RV Parks. In this part of the country, most towns have RV parking in their parks, even the little towns. Most wouldn't have 50amp though. Our town has about 1500 spaces but only 50 or so have 50amp, $15 per night, I think, we have the State Fair. Do a google search.
I wouldn't debate the beauty of one route over the other. The temps up here are forecast to be in the 90s next week. If you've done the I-90 route, why not try the I-94 one.
You won't go near the oil problems as long as you stay on I-94. The oil patch is further north near Dickenson and Sidney, MT.
There is a nice stop in Medora, ND. It's near the Montana line. Google it.
Do not plan on staying in a RV park in Billings. There aren't any real good ones and there must be a city tax or something, they are in the $40 and up range. I don't like to pay that much to sleep in my own bus. I have done it though.
Unless you have BIG HP don't consider climbing over Chief Joseph Pass on 93 south to Salmon, ID. It isn't as bad southbound as it is northbound though. I did it with a 8V71N and a 20' trailer a few years back northbound. Bad experience!!!! I wouldn't hesitate to do it now with the 8V92TA.
I might be able to help you some more if you need it. It's my stompin ground. Don't hesitate. If you're not dead set on I-29, stop by. I have parking and 50 amp.
I am at the Medora campground now did not have any problems getting a space midweek but call ahead 1 800 633 6721, nice campground.

Thanks for all the help. You guys are always a big help. I have called several of the suggested RV parks and I have been surprised to find vacancies. It looks like we should have places to stay no matter which route we take.

That is a kind offer. I will probably stick to the interstate but I appreciate it very much.
Thanks again,
