Title: Gas Stove
Post by: mugsytrpt on June 05, 2012, 08:12:49 PM
Good evening!  I am working on my bus and was able to purchase a gas stove from Lowes for it on Sunday.  My question is as follows:
If you have a gas stove, do you run the pilot light all the time or do you turn the gas off after each use.  The pilot light is easy to light and I am thinking I will turn gas off after each use.  Let me hear your thoughts and wisdom.  Thanks.  BTW.. I can't wait to use my bus this weekend.

Only use the pilot light when using the stove.  When not using the stove, turn all pilots off. I have a solenoid valve with inside switch so I can turn off the propane supply to the inside when not using the propane.  You should have a carbon monoxide gas detector near the stove and as close to the floor as possible since propane is heavier then air.  Good Luck, TomC

If I am not mistaken, it is true that the propane detector should be close to floor, but carbon monoxide mixes with the air.

Thanks for the comments.  I plan on turning off the pilot.

Did you buy an apartment sized stove from Lowes?  Many full sized gas stoves have electronic ignition these days.  You might still want to turn off gas anyhow.

Is your new stove Propane ? Natural gas uses different size "orifices" I believe that Propane has much smaller ones.

This is important. Most stoves sold in the U. S. come fitted with nozzles for natural gas. (All stoves here in Mexico come fitted for propane/butane.) If yours comes for natural gas, you need to get the right nozzles from Lowes or the manufacturer before using it. Most people who live out of town in the U. S. us propane/butane.
