Title: Skining My Bus
Post by: James77MCI8 on June 02, 2012, 04:20:55 PM
I am about to embark on the joyous chore of skinning my MCI 8.( above the signboard) Has anyone used fiberglass panels to do this?

i did it that way on my 78 flx around 20 yrs ago with sheets that were built for something like fishing or tug boat exterior of cabins. since then i have only used steel. Had no problems with the fiberglass over the years, but prefer working with the 18 ga stuff.

Thanks for the reply. I would prefer sheet metal too, but I am basically a one man show and I am looking for something that I can do by myself or with some hired help. I don't have a way to heat the metal and I am not skilled when it comes to riveting and the loike. What adhesive did you use to attach the fiberglass and what method did you use for backing?

Hi:

When I skinned my bus, I used the Canadian equivalent of Sikaflex (urethane adhesive).
I had to use a couple of rivets, nut for the most part, it's smooth and looks ok.

I always keep a tube or 2 around...it is a terrific adhesive.

i dont remember what adhesives i used that long ago, or how i fastened it..it itdidnt fall off, though. think i used about 6 foot sections, might have pop rivited it on back then... probably . and would have used windshield gasket making stuff in a tube to seal, cause that is what i use for a great seal for everything.
