Pulling 8V-71 and 4 speed from the bus to replace transmission and fix several oil leaks.
Got the bumper off, lots of stuff unbolted and out of the way. Time to try the borrowed engine stand.
....and the bus needs to be on blocks to use this stand. Gotta raise it about 8 inches.
Guess I should have taken a few measurements first and driven the bus up onto the blocks before starting.
Good thing I have an air/hydraulic jack and plenty of blocks around....and I promise to block up the body in several spots before I slide my slender self under to undo the driveshaft.

Mark don't feel bad I did the same thing last winter when I pulled mine, I got everything unhooked and went to slide the stand under and about 8" to low. I guess you live and learn. Be safe and good luck. Jason
I just finished our engine/tranny swap. It's not as bad as I had feared. Just dive in! ;) I'm taking my old tired 8v71n to the scrapper today for one last hoorah! Nobody wants an RTO anymore, especially an 8v71n.

You may be wrong about no one wanting an 8/71N anymore. I gave mine to my neighbor to take to the scrap yard and the owner asked if it still ran. When I responded that it did he said he wanted it handled carefully because he was going to sell it for a core. He has a market for old Detroit engines in the marine field. Maybe you could find someone in the marine area that would want it since you are near the ocean.
My engine, on a GM cradle, weighed 2640# and brought $175/ton.

Getting the bus up and on blocks makes it a lot easier to do things like undo the driveshaft, etc. Also on my MCI I needed to slide the cradle in and drop the bus down to set the engine on the cradle to roll it out, so if your setup is like that, build in a way to lower and raise the bus a few inches.

When I took my engine out to do the trans I drove it up on blocks before I started.
When you put the back up on blocks and leave the front on the ground it makes it a little harder to move stuff in and out because of the angle.
My suggestion is to raise the front and put it on blocks too so the cradle slides are level -- should make for an easier in and out.
AND Mark be careful sliding your skinny little body into and out of those tight places

Mel...its hard enough to squeeze under the bus, even with with it in the air. The tears of laughter thinking about your comment should be enough to slip me under....either that or a couple pounds of Tenderflake. ;D
