Title: Oil Filters
Post by: Lin on May 28, 2012, 08:37:14 AM
It's time to buy an oil filter.  iI have assumed that most like Donaldson, Wiks, Napa, and Baldwin are about equal.  I just noticed though the Baldwin has a variation for "severe service" promising extra filtration.  Is that of value here?

Would not suggest any Baldwin. If you only change your oil once a year, Baldwins have a tendency to disintegrate with time.  We found that out with Detroit's new DD engines having 50,000mi oil changes.  The Baldwins were coming apart around 35,000mi.  Hence, Baldwins are no longer suggested by Detroit.  The Detroit branded oil filters are made by Donaldson.  Good Luck, TomC

Wow, that's good info.  Would you then say to use only Donaldson?  I had thought that Wiks, which I think makes Napa also, was good quality.  Are there similar problems with those?

Are "Wiks" and "Wix" the same brand?

"Wiks" are for people who don't know how to spell "Wix"

kinda like "Cummings" and "Cummins"

I bought the top of the line, most expensive Donaldson.  I can't remember if they had different choices in oil filters for sure, they did have different versions of the coolant filter.   I get the impression from everyone I talk to that Donaldson is top of the line, they don't even make a crap option...

I too am curious how well the Napa Wix filters hold up. I have been using them for many years in autos and have been using them the last couple of years in the bus.

The last couple of years, I have been buying my filters at the Detroit dealer. That is oil, fuel primary and secondary, coolant and transmission. The price is actually just as good as the auto parts store's. And, as mentioned, they are Donaldson.

Ouch, price wise, at the Honda dealer for the genny's filter !!!

In the past, I have read supposed test results the said Wix were superior to Fram and some others.  I do not know if these tests were merely comparing auto filters, and if the the quality carries over into larger vehicles.  I would have guessed that they do.  I ordered a Donaldson filter today, but I do not thing that I would cross Wix/Napa off my list of suppliers.  Tom's experience seems to be specifically with problems with Baldwin.  Also worth noting is that Tom said they come apart at around 35000 miles.  That would be a rather long interval for us.

Lin, not only the 35,000 miles, but much over 6 months-which lots of us do.  I change my oil once a year.

If you have a Caterpillar, the Caterpillar filters are thee best filters made.  I don't know if they make Caterpillar filters for other makes of engines.  I know on my truck, I specify Caterpillar filters.  Good Luck, TomC

Wix,Napa,FleetGuard and Cat filters are just as good as Donaldson  ,if the Micron filtering is with in spec use it makes no difference what brand it is, Baldwins have been used for years on the 2 strokes and on the Allison without problems it was never my favorite but I am not afraid to use Baldwins or Fram

The last batch of Donaldson's I bought for a 8v92 were made in China and the threads were bad on all 6 not knocking Donaldson but stuff happens and they were the Detroit brand Williams replaced the filters seems like they had a bad batch

Me personally I like FleetGuard,Cat and Wix filters but will I buy the Detroit fuel and oil pack when WW Williams runs the special every spring for 24.95 for all 3 filters for the 2 strokes to good of a deal to pass on lol don't get to high on 1 brand of filters

good luck

If you really want to filter your oil get in inline centrifuge with bypass. I have one but I haven't used it on the coach.

I just realized that was totally irrelevant in this thread. It's almost 1 am. Goodnight.

I wouldnt trust any oil filter for 50,000 miles...period.  I dont see any technical data to back up what you think are the best filters.  Sounds like personal preferences to me. :)

Mine would be Wix, Napa Gold which are the same.

Believe is or not, the fact is that the new Detroit DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines all have 50,000 mile over the road oil change intervals-by the factory.  If you're doing less then 50,000 miles a year and doing mostly regional in town driving, then the oil change is 35,000 miles.

The fact that Baldwins were coming apart before the 50,000 mile interval has nothing to do with my personal opinion.  Just stating a fact.  Good Luck, TomC
