I'm replacing the hoses on my crossover tube and the two small hoses behind them look very convoluted. They are only 1" long and look like a bear to replace, especially the one behind the turbo. Should I replace them? If so, it appears the bolts have to be removed from the head to get the nipple out which will require a new gasket. Can I get this stuff at NAPA or do I need to go to a Detroit dealer?
They are the covers for the governor rack control rods. Basically they just keep the dust out and little splashes of oil mist in. Since changing them requires removing the rack control rods, you would have to open up the governor, twiddle about with tiny cotter pins and otherwise risk dropping bits where they ain't supposed to go... Plus theoretically you should run the rack after replacing the control rods, although I probably wouldn't bother. I wouldn't replace them unless they are obviously damaged in some way.
Edit - they are convoluted so they can squish up enough to replace them without taking anything off the head, so they are kind of supposed to look that way. On my old engine, they were held on with plastic clips, not hose clamps. I think I see that yours have the clips too.

Leave those alone David like Brian said you even have some of the good clamps fwiw you don't have to remove the there is 2 -1/4 inch bolts to remove the flange and pipe those clamp too.You should see the some of the GM's the guys rig up thinking they have to remove the heads.
Gear clamps that fit those are a lot better than the plastic crap if you can find the narrow clamp don't use the regular wide clamp like for a heater hose but check both sides for cracks they do go bad over time
good luck
That's great news. I won't change it. I've got an 6000 mile trip this summer and I feel a bit uncomfortable with all those old coolant hoses. They have been on there since I got the coach in 2000. I thinks someone mentioned that the blue colored, type hoses I have are silicone hoses and are supposed to be the best. I may have difficulty finding replacements like that. Should I do what's necessary to get the same kind.
This is going to sound silly but I like the silicone hose with the red liner. It isn't as prone to cold seeping. I have a bunch of high dollar silicone hose fittings that I bought to redo my race cars, they had the same material inside and out and they continuously wept fluid when cold. I find plain old Gates hose to be as good as anything, to be honest. Silicone hose is bought in 3 foot long straight sections and it's very expensive.

The old hoses I'm pulling off the coolant lines do have the red lining. I'll go to NAPA and see what's available.

No luck at NAPA. I had to go to San Antonio to Truck Pro to get it.
I paid $122 for 5' (3' of 2.75", 1' of 2.25", 1' of 1.75") I'll get it all replaced tomorrow.

Boy do I know some gals that got ripped off! They got a lot less than 5' of silicone and it cost them A LOT MORE than $122! ;)
;D BK ;D
Got them all replaced. Check off another job in the maintenance log ;D Took about 3 hours.
