Good day everyone: Presently about 0700 in beautiful Rapid City South Dakota. I left my home in Stillwater Mn on Sunday, drove a couple of hours to Lanesboro Mn and road the bike trails their on Monday and Tuesday. Drove Tuesday to Chamberlain SD and into Rapid yesterday. Going to bike the Mickelson trail today, tomorrow and who knows how long after that. On Tuesday had a strong crossing wind that kept me alert all the way across Mn and halfway through SD, yesterday another crossing wind from the opposite direction, that kept me awake as well. So it is good being Chuck. However, (there is always a however) my little 6V92 pretty much always starts on about the first half revolution or so, but on two occasions, it has taken a long time to start, like cranking for about 10 seconds or so. Other times it starts right away. Any idea of why the long crank times? I am concerned my batteries mat leave me, if I crank too long.

what were the air and engine temps? After a long shutdown and engine cold? Engine warm and longer cranking? its been 50-70's here so i dont know your temps but bet it gets a little chiily overnight.

When you are having to crank it for longer than normal do you have smoke from your exhaust? No smoke = no fuel on my 871.

You might have a leak in your uptake pipe in your fuel tank. Make note of the fuel level when starting to see if the hard starting happens when you are low on fuel. If so, you'll probably have to replace the uptake pipe-sounds like it might have a pin hole in it causing you to loose prime when the fuel is low. Good Luck, TomC
On my Mc-8 there is a relay that defeats the auto shut down when cranking. That relay went bad and would crank until oil psi was high enough to defeat auto shutdown.

Just an update, it only occurs when the engine has been run for a time, then shut down for maybe 15 minutes to a half hour. Starting right away no issue, waiting until the engine is cold not problem. So running on the highway for 3 to 4 hours, then shut down for supper, and it becomes difficult to start. Wait overnight and a piece of cake.

Check your fuel shutoff solenoid. Sounds like it might be sticking, keeping the fuel shutoff in the off position till the spring overcomes the stickiness. Take the air line off and
spray a bit of wd40 in it. Spray around the plunger, also.
Ditto what gimpy said. I had this problem And it turned out to be that air solenoid stop
Lever was seizing.

Just curious, does your detroit have a high idol switch? Some folks here have told me if your just stopping for fuel or rest stop a couple hours, let that puppy run. Of course that is if you can high idol that puppy.
Of course the above thread doesn't address the hard to start issue.
It worked! Sprayed with WD-40, and it started working. Gimp, there are cookies in your future, thanks.
