Well here I am again looking for some advice with my first problem of the year. Heading north on 101 yesterday stopped for fuel and noticed quite a puddle of oil for such a short stop. When I crawled under I found that the transmission oil pan was very wet on the front end only. I checked the bolts and they were quite loose. After tightening them the leak is still there. My plan is to pull the pan and clean it up and reseal. A few questions first -
- What should I seal the pan with? Do I need a gasket? I see a bit of red RTV on there now.
- How much oil should I buy for the refill?
- Anything else I should look for?

OK, I'll take a stab at it.
1. I'd use a gasket.
2. A refill, after draining, should take about 26 quarts. When refilling, you'd want to add 17 or 18 quarts and then check the level using the proper procedure, adding oil as necessary. It's important to avoid over-filling.
While you have the pan off, you might consider replacing the filter.
When reinstalling the pan, I'd highly recommend using a torque wrench to tighten the bolts, to avoid over-tightening. Allison specs the torque at 10-13 ft/lbs.

TM On my V730 in a 4106 the forward left corner of the pan barely clears the suspension knuckle. So close in fact
the tranny must be jacked to get at one of the bolts. When my engine mounts settled it rubbed damaged the pan and leaked. Shimming the rear mount was the cure after R&R the pan and repair. Mine has no filter just a "U" clean screen.

Looks like Pacific Power carries the gasket as a normal stock item. As a matter of fact they have 8!! Looks like I am in business.
