This is the last and final item on the long checklist I've had as we wrap up our 7 month stay in Florida. In 3 weeks we're headed to Michigan for 2 weeks...headed to Wisconsin for 8...then on to Ohio August-December. I have tackled a long list of to-do's with one last item to finish. Some of you remember our coach overheating and shutting down on 75 on our way down here. It was due to the exhaust downpipe rusting and falling off blowing hot exhaust over the coolant tubes and into the engine compartment. Need to replace this piece but preferably with a flex exhaust/clamp. Need a cheap fix here...not an "Order it from MCI for $300 fix". Ugh..love MCI, but hate the price of their parts. From my measurements, I need a 5.5" ID flex right? 6v92. Also, in the photo you can see a very slight amount of oily film (wiped in there with my fingers and it's really only a slight film). That looks like the main output from the hot side of the turbo. Mine was a slide in fitted piece with a vee band clamp, I had to find the unique Detroit Diesel size of clamp and I had to make the piece to slide in with the vee band flange. If you can find one for $300 from MCI, that's cheaper than me making one... I don't think just sliding some flex hose over that is the right way to go.

Yeah...I figured it would be drama. Interesting how they do this. There are three spring rings on that output. The downpipe slides over those but I'm not sure how it actually clamps down with a V clamp to keep it there. Never understood how it worked. I haven't made the call to MCI yet, that $$$ amount was a guess.
The three spring rings make me think the piece that fits onto that spigot is a cast iron fitting that creates a flex joint between it and the output. My 8V71 had one just like it at the output to the muffler, it was also the Y-joint to merge the two sides of the engine.

The Y-piece that the exhaust manifolds are connected to you can see clearly (except for the snow...) has the three spring rings. The cast iron piece with the exhaust pipe vee-band clamped to it is the cast iron bit that slides over the three spring rings. Seems like your missing piece might be similar.
I just went out and looked, and I no longer have that cast iron piece, long gone to the salvage. I do still have the vee band clamp that attached the exhaust pipe to it, the clamp is 5.5". Just a WAG, but maybe a similar cast iron ring would would fit onto your turbo and give you a place to clamp your exhaust pipe? BTW, they just slide together over the spring rings, there is a bit of a lip inside so they kind of lock together but retain some ability to flex.

Scott, my pic is an 8V71N, no turbo. I was pointing out the cast iron fitting on the Y-piece had the three internal spring rings to hold it together - same as yours. Except of course it's not on a turbo... :o Maybe they used a similar cast iron fitting to attach the down-pipe to the turbo, was my thought...

Mine is the 8v71 non turbo like Brians was and I found the new rings on ebay for like $20.00 each and if I remember MCI was $ 70.00 each and I also found the castiron piece on ebay for less than $20.00 all were new old stock. Keep your eye out on ebay some one might post some. good luck Jason

Not quite what I need. It's the downtube I need...no flex section in it. It's the large pipe on the left most side of the engine photo.
Actually it looks a lot like what you need. You need the cast iron piece to fit onto your turbo, then you need the down-tube, which will be a separate piece of thin gauge exhaust tube with a flange at one end to attach to the vee-band clamp on the cast iron piece. You need two pieces, at least, basically.

Just looked at the setup on a coach here in the parking lot. The original setup doesn't have a flange on the end. It's a very short (4 inch long) cast tube that fits over the turbo exit and then has a flange on the end of it to connect to the downpipe...the bend on the ebay one isn't nearly enough to work in my coach....here's more photos of the coach here in the parking lot setup identical to mine...maybe I'm missing something here...I'm slow with some things ::)

That's exactly what I was saying (or trying to say...). You need the cast ring to mate onto the stub section with the three rings on the turbo. Then you need exhaust piping to go down to the muffler. The exhaust piping is fairly stock stuff, I bought two 5" 90's and a section of flex pipe when I did mine. Vee band ends on the top 90 degree bend section is something any truck exhaust shop can do, or you can do it yourself with a pair of pliers and a hammer and dolly. It's just a 45 degree 1/2" bend out on the end of the pipe. You also need some band clamps to tie it all together. My local truck supply place carries all that (except for the cast iron ring) from Donaldson.

I have the down pipe that slips on to the turbo charger off my 6v92 from when I did my repower. It is used, of course, but in good shape. Only problem is I'm in MN and shipping might be more than it is worth to you. Let me know ...

All the down pipes are manufactures spec that is not a good setup MCI used it causes back pressure on the little 6v92 buy a flange from some one like Clamps Plus weld it on and use a V clamp then it will never be a problem if you ever need a turbo that type is tough to get sometimes on the road without changing the hot housing

That's exactly the piece I need! Is it about to rust through at the cast end of it or is that surface rust? Mine rusted through and fell off which is what put me in this situation in the first place :-( if that isn't rusted nearly through then please do let me know what it would cost to ship to apopka, fl 32712 zip. Slow USPS or ups would be fine.

Hi scott. The diameter of the tubing and flex on mine is 5". I would measure up the tube you are getting from 'tother Brian, and match that. The flex is designed with a 5" ID, to slip over a 5" OD pipe, and you get the matching band clamps with a step in them to fit over both,, and clamp them tight.
