Title: rehashing motorcycle hoist
Post by: mikke60 on April 04, 2012, 06:05:14 PM
I posted earlier about mounting a motorcycle hoist on the front on of my 5a. well, now I am back to mounting it in the rear of the coach. Can the old girl really handle the weight?  Looking at  an overbuilt brand.
thanks,mike

How much weight? Not that I can say anything about a 5a, but you got to give us a number.

I personally wouldn't put over a thousand pounds hung three, close to four, feet behind the engine on my MC-5.  In my opinion that's too much, with the leverage too far back.  The engine support frame isn't designed for that, I don't think.

With a bike that big, just put it on or in a trailer.  You'll be much happier with it covered as you're driving eliminating you having to clean it everytime you stop and want to ride the bike. Good Luck, TomC

My bike and hitch carrier are roughly the same weights you are discussing (although i have a frame so apples and kumquats) and I can tell you that it bounces and pendulums a lot, so much that the handlebar will put a dent in your rear door.  Also, cleaning the soot was a pain.  I just did it once.  I am adding the smaller size receivers on the outside corners to stabilize it, and will definitely be getting a cover for next time.

a trailer is option 2. the problem there is backing into a campsite. looking into the swivel wheel trailers, but they are pricey. any one use one of these yet?
thanks,again, mike

With a trailer that small I'd just get a "trailer dolly." Then when backing in a camp site or parking spot for that matter, grab the "dolly" out of the trailer unhook and park the trailer by hand. (you can even put it where it will be behind the bus to re-hook for leaving when ready)

When i was hauling a covered trailer with two motorcycles (an FLH and a FXS) I used it as a garage too, and moved it around with a power wheel.
If you are interested I still have it.... ;D
