Title: Pain at the Pump
Post by: luvrbus on March 30, 2012, 06:11:55 PM
Man do I feel for you guys I made a 1200 mile trip to Texas in the Trek and being real careful to keep the fuel price around 4 bucks it still cost 323.00 and probably when I top off Sat will be over the 400 dollars the info center said I used 81.2 gals

Happy traveling guys but it is going to cost you big time

good luck

Yup ! You don't have to remind me.

But on a side note last Friday when I was headed to East TN on I-40 I was bucking some terrible winds and I burned 1/2 tank of fuel (about 110 gallons), on the way home I was FULL and topped it off again yesterday and had only used 67 gallons on the way home same load, same route same route! GO figure!

In 2008 I did a 1,500 mile trip over Labor day and fuel was around $4.25 a gallon.  I then did a 4,000 mile trip three weeks later and fuel was right around $4 a gallon.  Fuel isn't high enough to stop me from traveling, yet.

I used to have an F-350 with travel trailer and a head wind would really kill the MPG.  From Minneapolis to Des Moines took 22 gallons the first time, 25 gallons the second time, and we ran out of fuel 60 miles from Des Moines the third trip.  It was windier than heck that time.  I wasn't paying too much attention to the fuel gauge as we could always make to Des Moines on the first tank.  By the time I noticed the low fuel and started looking for a fuel stop we ran out of diesel.  Luckily, I had a 5 gallon can full of diesel and didn't lose prime.

We ran the bus out of fuel once in a similar situation with high winds.  The fuel gauge wasn't working at the time, but it is now.  We had another vehicle following us and we were able to get back on the road 45 minutes later after filling the fuel filters and re-priming.

This is ironic, and quite funny (gallows humor) that you posted the currency and it's now devalued state.

Traders, hedge funds, I beleive the greatest single cause of increased oil prices is the printing process.

Glad to see bus owners shouldering on, Hopefully, this to shall pass.

I made a trip to Fla in Feb and took the Escape. Averaged 30mpg & enjoyed the snooze in the back with the dog. Nuthin like the bus.

I took trip to florida for 6 weeks. My fuel bill was high! My lot rent was less than $600. what would my motel bill have been?   Bob

The wife and I were thinking about trying an experiment to possibly begin the conversation of selling our bus by using a pop-up camper (Is that someone barfing in the background I hear as they read that!) and renting an SUV to keep the miles off our cars and when we did the math it was $1350 to Colorado and back in the bus towing our car and it was $1600 to rent an SUV and a popup camper to see if we like camping more like camping and less like a rolling cabin.

The math is getting closer and closer to making sense but we have decided to take the old girl out and let her stretch her legs a bit in July.
Of course as I was typing I realized that I need to change out the wet tank on our bus next week. That's $300 right there.

Anybody have a pop up we can borrow?    Just kidding,,,, sort of.

I plan to take a 21 day trip soon. Fuel will be right at $1500.00. Camp fees will be around $600.00.  The math says right at $100.00 a day. Don't think I can do a car and motel for any less, plus I have my own bed.

I just returned from a two week volunteer medical stay in Los Angeles. Amtrak Seattle to LA $88.00 plus a Roomette $147.00 full refund at Portland because of mud slide -(235.00) overnight motel 114.47, car rental $357.08 (two days for an Impala) fuel $128.00. Total $699.55, driving my bus and my own bed, priceless

Eagle 19952 that might be the funniest post I have ever read on this blog.

(note to self... don't check this blog while eating BBQ chicken at your computer)

Just a random thought here...Does anybody know how to get BBQ sauce out of the keys of a macbook pro?

Fuel prices have sure knocked the high end RV prices down also,I stopped at a auction on the way down it was terrible to see the 42 to 45 ft high end MH's that were repo's like a 2010 Foretravel with slides sell for 110,000 prices were so cheap they pulled 3 Prevost's from the sale and I was high bidder on one if that tells you anything lol

I wasn't even looking for a bus but if you can get one cheap enough why not I can always park it and watch TV

Where can you rent an SUV that actually has a usable hitch?  Car rental places typically get their SUVs without hitches.  If they come standard with a hitch like the Excursion did they put a locking pin in so you can't use the hitch.  It has been a while since I checked into this.

Clifford, I have one you can sit and watch tv in. Lol
My wife and I travel a lot from Alaska to Idaho and with fuel at todays prices, it would cost us 6,000 to take the bus. We have thought about getting a fifth wheel and pulling it with my Diesel Dodge. We figured it would cost 3,000 to travel that way. It is looking more and more like the fifth wheel is the way to go for us.
