Title: Battery isolator
Post by: bottomacher on January 11, 2012, 10:34:34 AM
I thought I knew what I wanted to use for my 24v MC9 with 24v inverter bank. When I started looking for one, I realized that I don't know squat. Can anyone offer a good suggestion? Thanks

I think that you want a high current rated solenoid type relay. They usually have silver contacts, but some even have gold contacts. There are some rated for surges to near 1000 amps. The ratings need to cover the possibility of cranking current going through the isolation relay in the case of a dead start battery or a lost cable connection.

I have seen reports of 24 volt bus alternators producing 300 amps.

Believe it or not, some sound gear uses heavy enough 12 volt ones; ours was around $55.
