Title: cleaning brake shoes?
Post by: robertglines1 on December 31, 2011, 07:30:00 AM
As many know I'm rebuilding a coach that had a rear brake fire on tags -disc brakes. In process I have drums on drives off. Brake shoes appear to be 80% new but have slight glaze look - drums look clean and free of oil etc. Should I hit them lightly with a fine grit belt sander to rough up or leave alone? Bob

Brakes are pretty important and shoes are cheap.  The biggest expense in doing a brake job is usually the time to get everything disassembled and cleaned up and you've already got that done.  Easy for me to spend your money but I know what I'd do.

The thing about brakes is that you often cannot tell what shape they are in until you really, really need them.  Marginal brakes will seem just fine under normal driving conditions.

If they are glazed, they have been abused and overheated.  Get the shoes relined-you don't need to use anything more then standard middle of the road brake linings (there are about 2 dozen types of linings available).  Good Luck, TomC
