I have a 1965 MCI 5 bus converted into a motor home and have too hard of a time driving it. It has a 5 speed standard tranny with no tranny or clutch brake and you sit for hours on start up and not get in gear. On the road is no problem I just downshift and stay in gear, but on start up can go nowhere.
I know you cannot install a clutch brake with the spineless out put shaft but was wondering if the out put shaft can be changed, or has anybody have any other ideas before I scrap the unit?
I have gone through more clutch adjustments than you can dream of but to no avail PLEASE HELP :'(

Go to a lighter weight grease in the tranny maybe time for a new pilot shaft bearing in the flywheel
I changed the transmission in my MCI7 to a Road Ranger RTO910, solved any & all issues, now have a gear for any situation, Also used the Kenworth Cab Over cable shifter setup, with 32' morse cables (2), works great. Big problem was due to the SAE #1 Flywheel engine bolt pattern with the #2 flywheel, it required an adaptor betwen transmission SAE #2 to munt to the SAE #1 engine, this put all lengths in order, also used the double disk 14: Spicer clutch. The Spicer SAE #2 flywheel is not very common.
All was worth it.

Two tips from the old wet-clutch GMC Buffalo days:
1. Put clutch in, bump transmission into 4th/5th, then over into 1st.
2. Shut off engine, put tranny in 1st, restart engine w/ clutch in.
Try it!

Could you have a situation where your clutch is hanging up just a tiny bit? What to do in that situation is to push in the clutch and gently lay the shifter up against the 5th gear location until you feel the teeth-dog clutches rubbing, then gently push against them some more to "run down" the gears.
When you feel the gears getting close, just put it into 1st gear. You most likely have the T905M or T1105M tranny. You might have to adjust the clutch slightly. DON'T keep the clutch in with the tranny in 1st gear....the clutch is NOT a neutral gear. You can do it! HB of CJ (old coot)
