Title: gather up those old batteries....
Post by: boogiethecat on November 29, 2011, 05:37:58 PM
I've been taking old deep cycle, and other lead acid batteries that accumulate, to a somewhat local battery place that always just 'took em' without hassle.  As far as my history goes, most places I knew about made you pay to get rid of them.
This time I had two pallets worth of the dead dogs, and I dragged them 40 miles to the place I always go... to find that they were out of business.... boooo!!!!!
So I dragged them back home and looked up a local interstate battery distributor, turned out to be 6 miles away,  called and asked them if they would take 'em, they said yes.

So today I dragged the pile once again and dropped them off.  The twist: Once delivered and as I was getting ready to drive off, the guy said, "hey wait a minute, payment time"... I cringed for a moment thinking I'd have to open my wallet, but then to my total surprise the dude handed me a check for $500 dollars!! WHAT???? Ohmygosh, these days they PAY you 25 cents a pound for the gross old things!!

So there you are, things have changed in the past few years from being a pain in the ars to get rid of, to the fact they'll PAY you for your dead house batteries and the like, and fairly decent money to boot!! Apparently the lead acid industry has figured out that with aggressive programs, they can now get almost 95% of their raw materials from recycled batteries! Very cool.

Cheers
Boogie...

For a short while back in the 70's i was getting $5 for a car battery. A short while later you could only get 50 cents, and later you could not even give them away. :)

In the state of Minnesota all retailers that sell lead acid batteries are required to accept any lead acid battery dropped off no matter if you ever bought anything there or not.  I guess the stores don't mind if they make money on them.

About four years ago I took a bunch of junk golf cart batteries to a scrap yard and they paid me $2 each.  It seems I was probably ripped off as I took in four group 31s to another scrap dealer this summer and they paid me $12 each.  I only found this place by accident on Craigslist.

Hello;  Today in florida the group 31s are bringing  $9.00  and the 8Ds are 25 bucks.  So the guys here are sucking up the profit.
new 8D dekka 149 with one year warranty exchange.   I had to replace a Trojan T105 which was $110 exchange..  I bought 12 in 2003 for 60 bucks eACH.
The house set is 12 T105s with good service but i had one cell which would not recover.  SPecific gravity zip.   i don't like replacing single batteries but money is tight .   I need the set for the big trip next year..  The big Alaska run.
      Regards    from florida   mike

Just sold a bunch of batteries to the junk man for $6 dollars a piece; thought I was doing well.  Well today I was pricing some new start batteries and found out the core charge is $26 a piece. Should have kept some of those old batteries as cores.

There is a place in West Sacramento that takes dead, used batteries and reconditions them for sale at a much lower price. It is called "Battery Bills"

I've found that when the core charge is extremely high that they will often want the same battery type in exchange.  They aren't interested in selling you an 8D and getting a lawn tractor battery in exchange.

The last time I bought my group 31s from a large battery distributor and they didn't charge me any core charges.  I was surprised as I thought state law requires them to do so.  I didn't mind getting $48 at the scrap dealer for my old batteries.

I usually buy a new car battery a while before it actually is dead so the wife never get's stuck and then I use it in other things and then grab another of the dead ones for a core. When the battery just taken out finally dies I put it in with the other dead ones. I've never swapped a core for an 8D yet but for cars I've always given them a dead car battery and gotten full core credit on another car battery no matter the size.

You know, it's amazing how many batteries you actually are using when you count them all up.

I recently replaced one of my 8Ds in my bus. I bought a new one at O'Reilly. They charged me $12 of so for a core charge. The guy told me to being in any 12v battery; didn't matter the size as long as it was 12v. So I took in a battery out of a portable auto jumper rig. The thing was tiny! It was 12v though, and they gave me my core back. He also told me to take my old one to Interstate Battery and they were paying something like .35 / lb. I have not done that yet, but probably in the next week or two.

Two old 2-8D's,????? Theives here in the Indianapolis,In area must of had this premonition last week way before

this post because they hit a school district bus lot over Thanksgiving holiday and stole 56 out of the buses and

classes had to be canceled on this past Monday. I can't imagine what the replacement cost would be to the

Just ordered 8 Diehard Platinum 1 AGM's and the core charge is $15. The sad part is the Optima yellow tops are still good batteries, just not good enough for my use.   Good Busn' Wilbur
