Title: Allison wtec III shifter
Post by: Ericbsc on November 15, 2011, 05:12:51 AM
I have a wtec III push button shifter I installed with my transmission. I have the red indicator which shows codes and gear. The reverse, neutral, and up and down have no illumination. According to the trouble shooting manual, T,and U are dimmer. V is ground. All this does is dim the display. I would think that the buttons would be back lit when you turn on the dash lights, but I can't find anywhere where they would be. Anybody else have this shifter, and are the buttons lit? Unfortunately I have no directions, or schematic for the shifter. It has a remote selector connector made on to it.

Eric FWIW none of the shift pads I have seen were "back lit" just the gear indicator.

Guess I'll just have to learn to fumble around in the dark!!!LOL Seems like the dang thing should at least be lit for what they cost!!! Reminds me of the $350.00 chrome controls I bought for the Harley. Had to spend another $ 39.99 to get the chrome screws to go with them, or use the zinc plated ones!! Only in America.

Yes, the WTEC III touch pads are back lit.  Will look at mine to remember which wire for you Eric.

Eric I went out and unwrapped my harness because it's been a long time since I wired the shifter lighting.  I am assuming you have shifter part no. 29538371 like I do.  I am also assuming you are looking at page C-10 of the WTECIII Controls and General Information, section 6.1 (Shift Selector Dimmer-12V).  If I remember correctly there were two unused loose wires on the incoming harness that plugs into the shifter harness (try yellow and gray), to be used for pad lighting purposes.  I ran one to ground, and the other to an unused fused terminal.  I did not tie into a dimmer circuit, my pad lighting is constant   Wire 187 connects to (U) and should go to dimmer.  Try connecting this to a constant power source with the switch on and not through the dimmer.  (T) connects to wire 186 and (V) connects to wire 188.  Both 186 and 188 go to ground.  If you need the wiring diagrams give me your email and I will scan them and email back to you.  The pad lighting is there, it's all internal you just have to find the right wire combination.  Hope this helps.

Boomer, according to the troubleshooting manual the harness uses terminals "T", "U", and "V". Two are dimmer??? and one is gnd. I called Allison and they said that the wtec pads are not lit. If they are wrong, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised. I have determined theat they or DD probably don't know their a** from a hole in the ground about most of their products!!LOL I will play with what you told me and see if that works.

Hard to believe that a so called Allison tech person does not know they have internal lighting, especially since it's right in the manual.  All the WTEC equipped Prevosts I owned had lighted pads.  Funny, but my local distributor told me the same thing until I pointed this out.

I was working on the jake, cruise yesterday and decided to look at the shift pad lights again. Again I called Allison and was told that the pad is not lit. I took Boomers tips and went to work GUESS WHAT??? The pad is fully lit!!!! Once again it is verified that Detroit and Allison make a great producut, but don't have a clue how to make it work!!!! Now if I can get the cruise to work the world will be good!!!

Eric, I found out that transmission does control the Jake has to be programed on the input pre-select and engine brake.

He solved my losing the Jake problem the B500 and 4060 need to have the program to match Power/Torque/Governed speed characteristics of the selected engine.

I knew he could solve it but he likes to see me to worry so he just drags it out and till it drive me nuts lol

I also found out if the transmission reads to much torque or HP it can send the engine back to idle if the transmission has not been pre- set with all the electronics the owner controls nothing

good luck

I've got another gremlin now!!! Started the bus up christmas and went for a ride. Drove like it had a fouled plug!!LOL Check engine light came on and off several times. When I got back the prolink said code 61 long injector time cylinder# 4. Turned it off and restarted the engine. No codes, drove around the bluck no problem. Started it up today, TWO fouled plugs. One active code 61 sylinder # 6. DD mechanic said that is a problem the 60's have. He said the internal connections on the injectors get loose. Got to pull the valve cover and check before I get back to the cruise!!! I LOVE IT!!!!
