Title: Opinions on Tecma toilet?
Post by: Boomer on November 14, 2011, 10:43:35 AM
Would like the busnut community's opinion on the Thetford Tecma Silence Plus macerating toilet please.  I hear Marathon is high on them.  What say you?

This one looks nice, carbon fiber.  Very reasonable too - under $11K! Bargain!

Does it wrap "it" in cute lil wrappers?? It should do something unique for that kind of loot.

For $11K it still has a shipping weight of 26 pounds.

Never heard of 1 costing 11 grand I replaced a 24v model in James Prevost if I can remember was less than 1200 with shipping the new one is giving him the same problems with the control board causing it to over flow

good luck

Thetfords Tecma toilet is an alright macerating toilet.  Down side-it uses a 4 bladed composite pump macerator that isn't real effective and draws up to 40 amps to power it.  Look instead at the Dometic Masterflush series.  Uses less than 20 amps, and has a 14 stainless steel cutter macerator.  It is available in 8700 porcelain for RV or in the marine section in the 8900 or 8600 which also can be equipped with a Bidet.  Been looking into these toilets for my truck, but am heading to try a gravity toilet first-even with the nearly 8ft run to the tank, but with a 4 ft drop.  Good Luck, TomC

For $11,000 (More than we paid for our bus!), I would expect it to pack the stuff and ship it to the nearest politician for him/her to use on the campaign tail.

;D    ;)

I wonder what the average price is of the boats this pricey toilet gets installed in. Does Larry Ellison have one in his yacht?

Carbon fiber, while black, is the bee's knee's for the ultralight racing yacht crowd...  It really is just under $11K...

So far the only place I've found it is West Marine.  It's programmable, though, so it's a "smart" toilet...   ;D

I don't think Mark will pay 11 grand for a toilet he will probably stay with the cheaper model like Marathon uses lol

Paying for a $11,000.00 toilet is a drop in the bucket when you're spending in the $100's of thousands on a race boat.  The carbon fiber head will probably never break either. If you want to see something-look up the 557 outboard engine.  It uses a 6 liter Chevy all aluminum V-8, puts out 557 horsepower and costs around $70,000 each-so for two $140,000!  Marine costs are unbelievable (ask Sean since he's looking at a trawler).  It used to be that boats didn't reach over a million until they were over 100ft.  Now, 45ft'rs are at a million.  But the vast majority of boaters still buy the under 35ft class of boat.  I priced out a 24ft Bayliner trailerable cruiser with trailer-almost $90,000 (with Diesel power of course)!  Good Luck, TomC

I think that we're being inefficient here.  Too much bandwidth is being used on "toilet threads".  I propose that we make up a "Answer to All Your Toilet Questions" thread.

We will divide ourselves into three sections (not too hard since we already have).  These sections will post:

1)  "I had a gravity type and it constantly leaked and let smells into the bus.  They're no good.  I won't settle for anything but a mascerator or vacuum toilet".

2)  "I've used gravity type toilets for purt near onta 39 year and they always worked perfick for me so that's the best".

3)  "Anybody who spends more than it costs to put in a 5-gallon bucket with a 2x4 across it to sit on is a fool, a hedonist, a techno-junkie, a spendthrift and probably drives a Prevost".

Then when anyone asks, "What's the best toilet?", only one person needs to direct him to the "Answer to All Your Toilet Questions" thread instead of us all having to re-type it every time.

Seems that Tom was the only responder to offer any real information among all these posts.  What happened to just answering the question?  I will rephrase the question:
Do the owners of (any brand) of macerating toilets find that they are worth the extra cost and do they stand up maintenance wise?  My other bus has a Microphor electric flush and the only issue in 5 years is the bowl seal ring drying out and leaking which I remedy by spraying with silicone.  The Silverside I am building will have a straight drop down to a 200 gal. combination black/gray tank, but in order to achieve the 200 gal. it will have to have an upper ledge in the tank and I am concerned about solids accumulating there.  Thinking that macerating the waste will eliminate a potential problem.

Boomer, my little attempt at humor was meant to kind of point that out, too.  I have no experience but I did note over several years of reading boards that people swear by or swear at plain gravity type toilets.  In my case, it's not much of a question since my toilet is going "upstairs" and a straight gravity drop wouldn't work.  So, I'm going with a mascerator (it should be wired in and working in the next few weeks).  But that's "my way" to fit my particular bus and probably isn't a lot of help to anyone else.

I did find (via Google) where some people had been discussing the Tecma toilet.  One noted that he had had a lot of debris in his feed water line and that plugged up the internal filter on the toilet (not the fault of the toilet and easily fixed); another had an installation problem, also easily fixed.  So, it appears that there aren't any large number of on-going problems with them and the few people who reported issues for any reason seemed to have no problem with rectification or repair.

(PS I've lost my receipt but my masc. toilet is a Raritan "Atlantes" and I think it was about the same price as the $950 which seems to be the best price for the Tecma.)

Can it be assumed that a macerating toilet wont work without electrical power??

Dometic macerator toilets need a 12v 20amp circuit.  Thetfords need a 12v 40amp circuit.  Since they use an electric motor to grind and pump, electricity is needed.  The toilets are offered in 12v, 24v, 32v, 48vdc and 120vac, 240vac and European 220vac.  But you need electricity.  Nothing more reliable then a good old gravity flush.  Good Luck, TomC

Actually I think Bruce was on to something here. I think it would be good to have a section for "converters faq" or something similar, where the questions that get asked and answered over and over and over can become part of a sticky list or something. maybe a technical "how to" section?
