Title: Off Topic and Politics Boards Clutter
Post by: gus on November 12, 2011, 02:44:40 PM
I think someone else has already posted this but is it possible to eliminate this clutter from "Show new replies to your posts." and "Show unread posts since last visit."?

This stuff is changing the bus board from its original purpose, it is getting as bad as Fox News.

Please!!!

I tried the Profile change you posted but it didn't work?? When I click "Change Profile" it just reverts back to the blank choices again and nothing changes?

See http://www.busconversions.com/bbs/index.php?topic=22224.0 (http://www.busconversions.com/bbs/index.php?topic=22224.0)

Mike says the setting to not see new posts in the politics section is not sticking and they will look at it this evening.

Brian,

Thanks.

Any idea why "Show new replies to your posts." and "Show unread posts since last visit." have disappeared from my page?

I only know as much as Mike posted about the political forum and the new messages thing.  I have no idea about the other part as those options still show up for me.

If you are not using the default theme for the board some things don't show up.

Gus, it is possible you may have accidentally clicked the little "-" at the right end of the bar that says "Hello Gus" at the top.  If you do that it hides the info block that includes those links and displays a "+" at the right end of that bar.  Clicking the + will then restore that info block and links.

Regarding the original post, we are working on the SMF addon that enables you to select in your profile one or more boards not to see.  When it works properly, folks will be able to select a board, e.g. the political board, and it won't be visible in the index page, and posts from it won't appear in the unread posts/new replies.

It may be a few days yet.  It seems to be an elusive problem, everything appears to be installed right, but the selection of boards to ignore isn't getting saved in the profile.

Mike,

Found the problem, I had somehow clicked the small down arrow on the left side of the button bar. When I clicked the up arrow all was returned.

These little things are really sneaky.

There are no - or + signs on my menu bars?

Thanks for your help and for the site.

Just to the right of the date is the "-"

Date shows up at ;

"Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.
November 15, 2011, 10:10:28 PM"
                  and here
"500 Members as of May 5th, 2006.  Smiley"

on my page, no - or + anywhere.

We must be using different page formats.

Look directly under the letter "m" in forum, top right of the page.

Gus, it sounds like you might be using one of the alternate themes.  Just as an experiment (you can easily change it back if you don't like it) try going into your profile (click the Profile button on the toolbar).  In the menu on the resulting page, look for "look and layout preferences".  Then look for the themes section and choose the "default" theme (first make note of the name of the theme currently showing there so that you can easily change back if you wish).

The reason I am saying all those "look for" instructions instead of where they are is that if you have an alternate theme, they might not be in the same place as the default.  After clicking the approve/submit/change (however it is labeled) button the look of the forum may change slightly or even drastically depending on what theme was selected.

The benefit of using the default theme is that over the years we have added several features to the site that are only available in the default template.  For example, several new toolbar buttons and a site search box  powered by Google that gives some people better search results than the built in search.  And I'm not 100% certain that the YouTube video embedding works outside of the default template.

Mike,

Works great. I'm not crazy about the pale blue type but now my ignore list works for the first time!!

I can't get the check mark to stay in the ignore box for the off topics boards either. I am using the default theme. Anything else I should try?

Tom,

Still doesn't work for me either even after switching to the default format, the checks just disappear.
