NICE RUST FREE 4104....HAS 150GAL PROPANE TANK,WASHER & DRYER,DISHWASHER, REAR BEDROOM, ACOLA RIMS..22.5, NICE BUS. NEEDS TITLE AND HEAD WORK. BUT EVERYTHING FEELS TIGHT WITHIN AND AROUND BUS. 2600.00 OBO. SELLING DUE TO LOSS OF STORAGE. 602-944-2292
I dont know if its the same Bus, but there was a 4104 out in there a year ago, the head was missing some parts, rocker cover, rocker arms, sounded like someone started removing the head and quit, etc., said it needed a head. I spoke to the guy once, asked if he had any pictures, but after that he wouldnt answer e mails, phone calls, I was interested but just gave up.
If its the same bus I wouldnt trust the seller very far. Those are the kind of people that get you to drive out to look at something, then disappear after you get there and you just made a wild goose chase. BTDTHTS. If you cant get someone locally to look at it it may not be worth your time.
Not running, not able to check out mechanicals, you should consider it scrap value.
No doubt.
There's also this 4104 closer in http://denver.craigslist.org/rvs/2684882540.html (http://denver.craigslist.org/rvs/2684882540.html) but here, too, one could end up with a scrapper.
Even though it's up in Fort Collins the tow to my yard south of Littleton would in itself make it a questionable deal. It'd have to be $1,000 tops.
For sale is a 1954 GMC PD4104. The bus broke down on the road about a year ago, was towed to an RV shop who could not figure out what is wrong with it. I recently had it towed to a truck repair shop in Ft Collins, CO, but as my job situation has changed, I will not have the money to continue troubleshooting the problem. I'm still convinced it's something simple like clogged fuel lines, but I will be forced to either sell, part out (not desirable), or crush the bus. Based upon rates I've obtained from the crushers, this bus is worth about $3k in raw materials, hence my asking price. It's good old steel and aluminum.
I would hate to see an old classic beauty like this be sent to the crusher, so I'm hoping someone is looking for a project bus to fix - and I'm willing to negotiate price for someone who wants to fix it. I bought the bus only a couple months before she quit on me, so I don't have a ton of history, BUT here is what I do know.
Original Detroit 671 diesel engine. The bus was converted to an RV in the '70's. Not a fantastic job, but it has a kitchen, bathroom, grey/black water tanks, etc. No seats, bed in the rear. It has a deck on the top, which the previous owner had removed a pontoon rail for tailgating/partybus.
The previous owner estimates the original engine to have had an in-frame rebuild about 40-50k miles ago, and it actually ran very well up until it unexpectedly quit on the road. I do believe the 4-speed spicer was the original as well.
Please contact me for more information - $3k or Best Offer!
He'll need luck getting $3K in scrap. You gotta get it to the scrap yard first. Its sad though, much of the older stuff will probably go that route, so much newer stuff on the market thats so cheap you'll feel like a fool not staying as modern as your budget allows.

That bus was also broken down about a year ago at the I-80 truck stop in Walcot, IA.

Whole autos are paying 175-190 per ton. My guess is you'd have to take it apart and run the separate metals through to see something in the $3,000 range...which would be a good learning experience for a future conversion but an unfortunate end for the bus.
You're right about newer busses - a '79 MCI sold on Ebay last night for $7,700. A pig in a poke to be sure but a running converted bus nonetheless.
The smart guys get the Bus for free and sell all the goodies like doors, engine, etc., and con someone into taking the shell (along with the seats and glass) for scrap. Only about 2000 pounds of aluminum in a 4104. At $0.55 a pound for clean aluminum, its really not worth the effort. And if you cant find a scrap yard who will give you clean price for painted aluminum with sealer on it, its an even worse deal.
If this Bus is repairable, it might be worth $1000 to the right person willing to take the chance. If its scrap, I would haul it away for free. Its really not worth more than that in that kind of shape, IMHO.

I saw that bus when I passed through Ft. Collins a couple weeks ago. Sitting on the north side of the road that connects I25 to 287. Didn't stop.
