Title: Allison HT700 Tranny Cost?
Post by: mcidave on October 24, 2011, 02:30:25 PM
I have been told I need a Rebuilt Allison HT700 Transmission and new Torque Converter...
Does anyone know how much that should typically cost with labor?
I have an 1982 MCI9 Crusader II.

3500 bucks for a rebuilt 740 with a nation wide warranty a little less for a mom and pop warranty where you take it back to the rebuilder and around 20 hrs labor by the time they are done about 6,000 plus

As usual Clifford is on the $!
Used range from $750-1,500 but remember you get what ya pay for and a used one may or may not last long enough to make it worth the effort. (my experiences w/740's though is that they are darn near bullet proof and last forever. I have installed several used ones over the yrs and to my knowledge none have failed since.)

Just depends on how big a gambler ya are.

Dont know if this will work, but I have an allison mt-654 I removed from my bus for an engine change. I will beat the $3500 by a lot more than half. P.M. if interested.

Eric,
The $3500 Clifford mentioned was a re-maned w/warranty for $3500.

Used they go for $750 to $1500

Doesn't the 600 series use a number 2 bellhousing or a step down and the starter ring is on the flywheel where the 700 series is on the torque converter

good luck

Dave -

Who told you you need a new/rebuilt transmission and torque converter?

Did they tell you the "why" also?

Have you gotten another opinion?

Homework time!

FWIW & HTH. . .

Don't know if a 740 (four speed) is the same as what you need, or if not, could still be adapted to your needs, but I know of a running take-out in the N Georgia area whose owner just wants to get rid of it cheap.

If you buy a used 740 transmission take it to a Allison dealer have it put on a Dyno it only will cost you a couple hundred bucks for peace of mind and a clean transmission

good luck
