I called Stewart and Stevenson the other day to order a valve cover gasket, but I didn't have the serial number for the engine. i should have ask him more questions, but I didn't. How many different style of valve covers did they make in 1964? Is it that hard to match?
I have a valve cover leak and have considered using form-a-gasket. Has anyone had success with that?
Have used it, dont anymore. I use it only as a last resort and almsost never been satisfied. Plus invariably some will come loose inside the motor and eventually end up on the oil pickup screen. Just bite the bullet and get the correct gasket. These motors seem pretty prone to leaking a lot to begin with without asking for it.
How many versions? Wow, I bet its a lot, when you consider all the road, off road, and stationary equipment that used the 71 series. Remember the 4-71 and 16V71 used the same basic rocker cover.
two basic versions.. one for a stamped rocker cover, one for the aluminum cover. It ain't brain rocketry for those guys... go to http://www.powerlinecomponents.com/partscat.htm (http://www.powerlinecomponents.com/partscat.htm) and order one that is appropriate.
Thanks artvonne and Dallas. I appreciate your feedback.
4 different style gaskets kits 2 for the stamped cover and 2 for the cast PC asks for a serial number hard to get parts from there with a serial number also, best DD parts man in the business is Bill at WW Williams in Phoenix Az
good luck
Form a Gasket works great if used properly. Even better if you have the gasket too.
