Well on my 8v92 it's looking from the back of the Bus on the driver side at the front of the motor. So if your looking at the back of the bus and you see the Damper look at the upper left side of the motor on the block right below the head or dight behind the wqater pump. should be there. Right Clifford ?

My V-71 manual says its under the exhaust manifold on the rear right hand side of the engine looking at  it from the back.  Kind of directly under the air box covers.  From what I know of side-winder GM's that would be the bit of the block that you cannot see...

There's lots of other good info on this site.

I am having the same problem finding mine.  ??? If it is on the backend or valve cover it should be easy, but on the bulkhead side it is tough to see much.

Here's a trick I've found useful for hard to read serial numbers: use your digital camera.  Poke it up close to where it needs to be to "see" the serial number and then snap a bunch of shots.  Sometimes they'll be out of focus and sometimes you'll miss the aim but if you take enough snaps usually you'll get one that you can blow up enough to read the number.

Those serial numbers are almost impossible to read on a sidewinder, check the valve covers for a tag

good luck

Here is another thought FWIW.  The engine in a 1965 bus is going to have been rebuilt a  few times, so any info you might find from the serial number is going to be out of date anyway...
