Title: New throttle cable - Testify!!!
Post by: bevans6 on October 10, 2011, 08:19:55 AM
Yes, I am here to testify that a new throttle cable is indeed a test...  of will, of cunning, and of specifying that the new throttle cable you have made up at great cost has ends that are no larger than 1/2" in diameter or it will hang up around 3' inside the bus when it hits the first of many grommeted cable guides that have an ID only slightly larger than 1/2".  The ends on my new cable are .65" in diameter and will not go through the guides.  I haven't decided what to do - I can't return a custom cable, so I may cut the crimped on end off of one end and pull it through without, then put it back on after it is in.  I hate cutting up brand new stuff, though.

Can you grind it down a bit to make it smaller?

Split the grommets so they can be put on the cable at any point?

the grommeted cable guides are buried deep inside the central trough that carries all of the bus plumbing fore and aft.  Absolutely impossible to get at without disassembling most of the bus.  And cutting the floor out down the central aisle.  My saving grace is I have a pull rope that I pulled through when I pulled out the old cable.  In an ideal world I would have had the new cable on hand, it would  have been the right size, I would have joined them together with a joint nut and pulled the new one through when i pulled out the old one.  But I needed the old one out so I could order the custom made new one.

I think I will try grinding .100" off the outside of the ferrule on the new one before I cut it off.  Baby steps of destruction, as it were...   :P

You know, of course, that's why people like me, AKA  unwilling to renew my fortitude for messy jobs, invest in air throttles. The quarter inch air line just slides through the tunnel.  Still ended up as a two day job. Remaking the plate to fit on the governor housing was soooo much fun. Good luck with your creative destruction.

I am told by reliable people (you know who you are) that an air throttle and a Spicer 4 speed don't mix, although I was/am sorely tempted...
