Title: Fuel Line ID/Advice
Post by: travlinman on September 30, 2011, 10:43:47 AM
Hey Guys,

I am not familiar with the fuel lines on my 4106, so I come here looking for knowledge. I want to install an in line fuel pump during my upcoming service, before I touch these fuel lines I need to know what I am dealing with. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

It's all 3/8" either copper tubing or NPT, depending on where you are looking.

Here is how I did it on a 4104.

It's impossible to tell for sure from the pictures.  My fuel lines were a combination of -6 and -8 (6/16" and 8/16" ID, or 3/8" and half inch to normal folk).  My main line from the tank was -8, some of the pressurized lines were -6.  I would probably figure out where you are going to place your pump and plumb it in, then get some hose and 45 degree fittings and hose ends, and make up new hoses for it.  Your existing fittings look like inverted flare fittings.  The line size is usually marked on the hose end, on the hex somewhere.  It will be the -size, as I described above.  If you do this, remember that there are two sizes of -6 hose end - SAE and JIC.  I think I used JIC, but to be honest I take a sample of what size I need with me to the store since I always remember the wrong one if I don't.

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I understated my lack of experience here.

- Correct me if I am wrong, the fuel line itself is braided steel line? Where is a good source for this?

- I have attached more detailed photos of the fittings. Where is the best source for these?

- Should I have flare nut wrench to work on these fittings?

Thanks

I buy the hose and ends at an Aeroquip hydraulic hose dealer.  I buy the hose that has a black fabric outer with the braided steel layer under that.  The upper fitting is indeed a -6 size, so 3/8" ID on  the hose, you can see it written on the fitting.  I would do exactly what I actually did again - I took the hose I wanted to replace and put the pump into, and the pump, and went to the store and put it on the counter and said "make this work"...

Your bus looks familiar.   Do you know where it came from?
