Title: Overcharging batteries
Post by: Fred Mc on September 19, 2011, 07:42:39 PM
I have a problem with my GMPD4106 seriously overcharging the batteries.I can't easily get to the regulator to adjust it and need to move the bus. Once the bus is running can you disconnect the batteries(I have a disconnect switch) or will this ruin the generator. The generator is the original oil cooled one(can't remember the name right now-- 50N???).

Thanks

Fred.

It will be fine. if you disconect the battery before you rev it up it should not even start charging. You will need to shut it down by hand if no power.

How do you shut it down by hand?

Thanks

If it's a stick, press your foot on the break, place it in gear, then drop the clutch. That's just me. Weather it's right or wrong, it's my way.

on top of the engine is a plunger that work off an electric / air solenoid. You will see it. Next to where your throttle cable hooks up to. This is how mine works on 8v71 just turn the lever by hand and it will shut down. If you need to have someone hit your kill switch and watch it work. I left my bus running one time for 30 min because I disconnected my batteries. I could not here it over the genny. I turned off the switch and just got out of the seat. I heard the air drier pop of and walked back there and sure enough it was running still.

I decided to bite the bullet and cut a hole in the old battery compartment to allow me access to the regulator. I had put my water tanks in that compartment many years ago (before I even knew the voltage regulator was there). Anyway I am now able to adjust the voltage.

Thanks for the insight and help though. You learn something new every day.

Regards

Fred

Some idiot did the same thing with my 4106. The regulator is in back of the batteries on the bay ceiling in between the poop tank and the ceiling, only a few inches of clearence.

I have read of horror storys where the crank end breaks off of the DDs. I wouldnt be doing that. Its your ride tho.

You don't want to disconnect the battery from a running alternator.

If it has a 50DN, which I think it has, it is an alternator even though GM calls it a generator.

It it is actually a generator, then there is no problem.
