Title: "Growl" and some shaking when turning the bus
Post by: JT4SC on September 05, 2011, 09:54:38 AM
Hey guys,

Outside of my generator issue my biggest concern with my bus post-hibernation (I didn't turn it on for a year) is a new "growl" and some shaking in the front-end when I am turning the bus.  When we are going straight no problems or noises at all, but if I have to make a typical turn onto a road or freeway the growl comes alive.  Since I have owned the Moose it has always had an annoying whistle when you turn, which I assumed was a power steering issue.  I had a bus mechanic try to find a leak in the power steering hose or some tell-tale sign as to why it would do that but he wasn't able to find anything.

BTW I own a 1993 MCI 102C3 with a 6V92 DDEC.

Any ideas?

Have you checked and made sure it has plenty of power steering fluid?

Any idea when the last time the filter was changed?

When I first turned the bus on there was not much power steering at all, which scared me.  I turned it off, went to Autozone and bought some power steering fluid.  I put the fluid in and it was night and day - much better.  But then I took it out of the storage area and it had the growl.
As for the filter, I didn't even know it had a filter.  That's embarrasing.  I will try to replace that first and let you know how it goes.

Jim -

Since it was low on fluid, there's also the possibility that you've got some air in the lines.

Double-check the fluid level - it may need more.

Bleeding the air can be done by turning full left and holding, then turning full right and holding, repeat.  Best done with the front axle off the ground, if possible.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Thanks RJ!!  Question - how long do I keep holding when I turn the coach full left and right?

When you get the air out and the growl stops the whistle is a easy fix just takes a noise reduction disk on the return line part# 3331991k

good luck

Awesome, thanks Clifford!  Is there a website you recommend I order that part from?
