Having nowhere to buy my holding tanks down here in central Mexico, and with just 7 days left before I have to be on the road, I finally stumbled across a local recycling center just three blocks from my house. I had never seen it before, because it is behind a high wall.
These jugs are used to transport the concentrated syrups used for making softdrinks at the two local bottling plants. (No toxic chemicals.) They come in sizes from 5 gallons all the way up to 230 gallons.
These 4 cost me just 400 pesos total, less than $35 U. S.
Great score! I too shop at recycle centers. I just got a brand new counter top, kitchen sink and faucet for 55 bucks. I've been very fortunate to find a bunch of good stuff for the bus at bargain prices. No tanks though, just paid 900 for three new ones. Ouch. John M.
Let me clarify that this is a place where they take the containers and resell them, or what doesn't sell, is melted down for the plastic. Not just a normal second-hand or left-over stock place.
I am sure there are dozens of industries that use this type of containers, if you look around. Just make sure your fresh water tank is one that has never been used for chemicals of toxic stuff. Black and gray probably doesn't matter so much, unless it is something that would be illegal to dump in a sewer.
If you can make them work thats a good score. Being only 35 feet, space is pretty precious in mine, so im going to make my own custom tanks. Picked up the high end plastic welder at HF, now all I need is a few sheets of plastic, a free day, and its off to the races.
