Title: 6v92 fast idle
Post by: demodriver on August 18, 2011, 06:31:07 PM
Ok I read in a thread earlier today that the fast ideal is not the best thing for the the DDs.

The shop that I had inspect my bus suggested to use the fast idle any time that I let the bus idle for a period of time.

Whats the best thing to do? I hate conflicting info on stuff that I dont know much about..... :-\

thanks ahead of time. Eric

yes fast idle if for a log period. But why idle or long period. Fast idle should be 1100 rpm. once air is up unless your trying to ac/ cool bus.  My coach airs up in about 6 minutes from zero on a cold day.

I like fast idle because it gives me 30 to 40 psi oil pressure, versus next to nothing  at slow iddle. I don't let it iddle much, but at times when I do, say stopped for construction for a few minutes, or building air after start up, or walking around for backing up for instance, fast idle (1000 to 1200 rpm) is better than slow idle (6 to 700 rpm).

Fast idle is designed to let the engine run supporting a load, be that heating the interior or cooling it, for long periods of time with minimized harm.  Not no harm, just less than idling would do.  Always good practice to minimize idling of any sort, but fast idle is the lesser evil.

I drove my bus back, when I bought it, from Denver to northern Michigan.  It was just a "bus", not a conversion.  My wife and I had to sleep inside and the nights were very cold.
So, I had the same question, should I let idle slow and quiet, but with very low oil pressure, or kick up the high idle, with more oil pressure and presumably more fuel usage?

I only add this comment to explain one reason a person might idle for a long period of time.

By the way, even at slow idle, it was warm enough and the rumble actually helped us sleep soundly without hearing other trucks.

have idle detroit in cranes etc for years (low) no adverse effects. not a perfect world. sure truckers let them run all nite when parked at low idle for years.  whats rite in a perfect world and what really happens.

demodriver,

remember that busnuts fancy themselves as missionaries in the Blessed Church of the Detroit Diesel.

with great zeal and loosely interpreting the religious writings...

we take these old whores of coaches,

dress them up in white dresses,

and pretend they are virgins again.

Just run the engine when you need something from it.

As for guidance, as noted already, fast idle is the way to make air, electricity and air conditioning refrigerant in sufficient supply.

If the engine is not doing something in the way of work, whether it be in a coach, car, or other equipment...

Why would you leave it running and burning expensive fuel?

happy coaching!

Anything around 800 to 900 rpm is a good number for fast idle 1200 is a little high for me for one without factory AC,you don't even idle a 92 series for cool down after a long hard pull and working you run it at about 1/2 throttle for a few minutes shut it down lasts for a long time that way.
I still don't like the fast idle lol when they were on buses there was some type load on the engine

good luck

Yes I know that any engine sitting at idle is generally a bad thing.

I dont leave my bus running for periods of time excpet for when I leave it running for my dogs with the AC on.

Thanks for the input,

O and in response to the oil pressure concerns.  I get 70 psi while going down the road at around 1500 rpms and I think around 35 or 40 at idle.   I dont know if its correct but odometer only reads 128k.

Eric

Clifford, I have always been told to let anything with a turbo cool down for a few minutes after running it to cool the turbo down. In your opinion is this not necessary for the turbo?

Not my opinion Eric DD recommendations if you have a ETG meter you will see they go way down in temperature with no load ,the way I do is run about 1/2 throttle for a few minutes let it reach idle  shut it down, never lost a turbo or cracked a head on a 92 series but we all do it different

good luck

thanks,

Most everything that I have been told to let cool is heavy equipment. None of it was DD powered tho. All perkins or AC in my equipment.

Well I would allow a few minutes for cool down turbo or no turbo (five minutes at least)

My way

I mostly find that the time spent getting off the road, rolling around the parking lot, backing into a spot, is well enough time for the turbo to cool down.
