Title: Flew out and drove it home
Post by: Just A Newell on August 09, 2011, 09:28:29 PM
Here is our start on the bus board and to traveling.

My Daughter and I flew into San Jose Ca. to buy The Newell and drive her home.  The trip started bad being stranded at airport for two hrs. and then stranded in the pickup lane with the sellers pickup. Once the coach was bought we were sent down the 101 on empty to find fuel.
Things got better fast as we turned the corner to Cayucos and my Daughter saw the ocean for the first time.

We left the beach after sundown set the nav for Bakersfield Wal-Mart to see Don in the morning. I was too caught up in the moment to take pictures at Don's but glad we stopped. As we pulled in he could hear something amiss. Turned out to be broken exhaust manifold. After spending the day with Don, getting a new manifold and tuneup we headed for Arizona were we caught up briefly with technomedia

After being left by the 4106 we headed to the Grand Canyon, a first for both of us.

After camping on the south rim and watching the sun rise we set the nav for home so my wife and son could start enjoying the new ride.

I will sign off now with some interior shots.

You know, Ed, around here we read of a different kind of first bus trip experience. What of the plugged fuel filter? The cracked liner? And your bus looks done, finished!  ???

Where is the "it stopped in the middle of the road". Then you go out to look at the rear end of that million-plus mile, fifty year old sweatheart, and the only thing that comes to mind is "what the ####".

Well, that's a bus story. ;)

Your rig looks great.

Nice coach, the old Classic style is far more appealing than the new one's.  (That is the way I see it)  The Grand Canyon and the ocean, first timers, incredible.  Memory makers for sure.  Not a whole lot of truck-stops in the Bay Area, you should have found some down toward Salinas or Gilroy.

Who in the world is "Don" no one ever puts up this guy's last name.  He must be the Cher of bus fame or something (when you are famous, you never need a last name, that kind of deal).

Looks like you made a good choice.  Nice clean, sharp looking ride.

Enjoy.

Welcome to the madness!  ::) Those memories will last a lifetime.

I did the same thing with one of my daughters, flew in and drove home. A great experience for both of us.

Don, would be Don Fairchild. A master of two strokes!

Thanks Paul, kind of thought it might be him, but then again, I thought he lived in Colorado.

Congrats on the beautiful new bus... and sounds like you had a wonderful adventure with your daughter in the process!

And how we wish we had known we were being followed so we could have stopped and said hello!  Thank so much for snapping those pics of us, also on one of our first bus voyages!! :)

Loving bus life!

Hey Don, when you are Don Fairchild you are simply known as "The Don"
and well you on the other hand have the fame of being "The Okie"! LOL!
I'll stop now while I'm ahead!

Oh and "Newell & Family" Welcome to the madness!

What a great story and pics. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. We have all had wonderful time on the road one time or another but this appears to be one of those "special" times.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and the wisdom on here, I have been a reader for a couple of months and what I have learned helped on the way home.

It must be nice.

Now that my picture is no longer posted at the main post office, I discover I am not so famous, this of course, is hard on a guy, wanting to be something in a do-I-know-you-kinda-world.  I have a friend in Arizona and every time I call him he answers up .... "Okie!  How you doin' man?" and he knows my first name is Don.

So there is credence and wisdom in what you say.

We could call these new Newell folks MIO's (Meeee-Oh's) for Made In Oklahoma.

No good huh, well whadya expect for free?

Now that's a handsome Newell.   I really like the clean airy look inside, much more spacious-looking than most RVs and conversions.   One question  -  is that a real telephone up front next to the driver?   Does this prove what us prols have always suspected  -  every Newell comes with a butler, and it's for telling him downstairs to press your smoking jacket before you get home.   Just kidding  -  they only have a maid, don't they?

JAN,

How did you locate your Newell?   Service, adds, Craig's, a friend, eBay.....?

Thanks,

John

The phone is for the on board butler, there are three phones on a closed circute and a speaker outside with a doorbell and viewing camera. If you run out of toiletries just call Alfred.

Hey,

Have you signed up over at newellclassic.com?  They would love to see the same post. Most of the gearheads (knuckleheads) overthere aren't too much different than here.

And before I get flamed, the boyz and girlz over there aren't the owners of the new million buck units any more than the most of the folks here don't have new Preyvoh's.

Great post.

Congrats on your purchase!  Newell's are neat!  Love the light-colored interior, adds "space."

Now, since your daughter went with you on this maiden voyage (I'm guessing she's 14?), you've got to start teaching her on how to drive it, too.  Along with your son, when the time comes.  Mama should know how, also.

Can't you just see the look on the DMV technician's face in a couple of years when you daughter goes for her first driver's test in the Newell, rather than the family car?

Priceless!!

:D
