Can anyone suggest what type of fluid I should use for my steering ? Also, by tracing the lines, I assume the fluid goes in the coffee can size reservoir with the sight glass on the curb side of the engine.

Tks
Yes it goes in the coffee can sized apparatus on the curb side mounted just rear of the head. should be a fill spout mounted to the curb side of the intake air horn on top of the blower. You can use atf if it's the stock steering setup.
If it is Sheppard, 15W-40 engine oil. All others normal ATF. Look and see if your fluid is red (indicating ATF) or clear (could be hydraulic oil or engine oil). Good Luck, TomC
Thanks all... it was atf.
