Title: brown tag N65 timing??
Post by: thomasinnv on July 01, 2011, 08:55:07 PM
I have a non turbo 8v71 w/ brown tag N65. da book shows 1.484 for advanced timing and 1.460 for standard timing. Clifford (luvrbus), you said you thought it was most likely standard timed when i was at your place. Is that a most likely guess? or what should I be looking for? I know you have to pull the bell housing to know for sure. Anything on the build tag that might give an indication? I would like to get the correct timing gauge so I have one in the tool box.

pm sent. Thanks Clifford!

btw, I will be r&r the blower to get to some pretty bad leaks later this summer. I assume i will have to re-adjust the left and right rack connecting rods, but everything else should be fine?

If all you do is change the injector height setting you shouldn't need to change the rack finger settings.  On my 8V71N it had the brown tag n65's and was timed at 1.460, and it had advanced timing so I guess I could have changed it to some advantage but never did that.  Anyway, you can check the timing pretty easily without taking anything big off, by using a dial gauge.  Procedure is in the manual, and the difference between normal and advanced is pretty big on the dial gauge.  (Pretty easy compared to taking the back of the engine off, you still need a tool chest and a couple of hours...)

My pet peeve about these engines is that no one has yet been willing to tell me what the different injector height settings do other than set the timing of the injector.  Is 1.460" setting advanced or retarded compared to 1.484"  What is the difference in performance?  Smoke? Economy?  Are you on the heel of the cam lobe when you set it, or are you somewhere on the opening or the closing ramp of the cam lobe?  Inquiring minds really want to know!

Get you the supplemental on injectors tells all you guys buy the 2 part manuals and that covers just about the basics.
I saw the 12 volume set for the 71 series sell for 1500 bucks not long ago on Ebay wasn't a bad price since you can no longer get it from DD

good luck
