Title: Mini-split a/c

Has anyone put a mini-split compressor in the spare tire space in an mc9. It would have to be mounted horizonally. I was told it works that way. I would probably blow the air out the bottom. Thanks for the input, Marc

Now THATS thinking outside the box.

I have a mini-split to install too, and that would be a great place for the condenser.
I would sure like to know if it would work also.

Anyone have knowledge, yea or nay??

I'm putting one in there but standing uprite. have 27 inches of height and unit is 24 inches tall(condenser) Have access door in floor from inside coach. Hope to never open :but simple 4 screws and will access for service without climbing into spare tire compartment. Well insulated and camouflaged  Bob

Fellows,

The mini split systems you are looking at, are they 120v and what is the output?

Back in the day when I owned a rusty Eagle, it had a split system. The condensor was all the way in the back where the bus ac unit was. It was vertical. Only problem I ever had was I had to remove it to replace the starter. Worked great. I also have one in a cargo trailer that I am trying to sell. Think I'm gonna keep the ac though. It will freeze you out. The compressor on that is mounted on the tongue also vertical!

Doug; I'm using one 12,000 and 2  ea9,000 btu heat and ac inverter style Mini-split 410-r systems in a 45 ft coach. 120 volt.   Bob  Ps I do have drivers air for going down the road as a back up if needed.

Marc; Just talked to a fellow bus nut and hvac guy.   He uses Mini-split. His impression is if you do it you will prob end up with junk!   Make sure of your source and then triple check.   Bob

Hi Guy's,

Depending on which type of compressor is in your mini split system, [dc inverter drive or rotery scroll] both types

are dependant on an oil reservoir at the Base of the compressor to lubricate the inner moving parts. Laying a

compressor over sideways would allow the system to pump most of the oil out of the base of the compressor

resulting in failure. There are some types of compressors that are designed to lay on their sides which Dometic has

used for their Penguin units.

Thanks guys for the input. I was sceptical about the horizonal approach,but wasn't sure. Thanks Nick for giving us clarity on this. I am looking to install 12,000 btu 120 volt. The one I looked at had a Toshiba compressor 13 seer with 5 year warranty. Less than 1000.00 for equipment. I may have to use the old condensor compartment and move my inverter and house batteries. Would welcome any thoughts on this. Thanks, Marc
