Here's a strange story about a tour bus line getting shut down for carrying passengers in the luggage compartment.

WOW!. Not even in Banana Republics!
As much as anything, because most buses in "banana republics" don't have big underfloor luggage bays! What they often do have are big luggage racks on the roof, on which the chickens/goats/women/etc go, while the menfolk sit inside. However, in hot weather it's better to sit on the roof - it's much cooler, you can see what's around, and you can jump off if a crash is imminent. Some years ago I took an ancient Tata bus in Nepal from Dumre up the Marsiyangdi river valley to Besi Sahar, to save a day or two's walking on my trek around Annapurna - in addition to having patches bolted onto its rear tires (recaps are just so bourgeois and decadent in comparison), and having a small boy running behind as we climbed vertiginous grades in crawler gear so he could jam rocks under the tires in case we rolled backwards, there were a dozen of us on the roof. We were asked to move from one side to the other to help prevent the bus toppling over on some of the more memorable sections of the "road" (for some of the way we drove up the bed of the more-or-less dry river, because it was smoother than the road next to it). Greyhound's just so boring and predictable in comparison!
It makes me laugh when I see folk here getting all excited about transgressions like in the article - in some countries it would be worthy of a luxury surcharge to be able to go inside the luggage bay, instead of on the roof or being crammed inside.

Sounds like the driver was selling his own tickets

And last week Polish contortionists Krzysztof Grzegorz and Jouoastaw K were busted for stealing from travelers after sneaking into the luggage hold of a bus by hiding in a suitcase. LOL I would love to know how they were caught? someone sneezed in the suitcase? LOL
I needed a good laugh about right now.
Thanks
I would pay an extra few $$ for the luxury accommodations of the luggage bay!
i think it was another driver sleeping down there.
Somewhere is more info on it.
