We have been trying to find the serial number on our 8V71 engine. On the front of the block there is the following stamped. TWYS 8UAB114 1900-B-83-D. Does anybody know what these mean? Is this the serial number or are they some place else?

is there a placard on the valve cover? the serial number on the engine will tell what configuration the engine was first built as, but may not be of any use now if the engine is not untouched and original. a current tag on the valve cover should tell you every thing you need to know about the engine.
This should help you with serial and model number. There's even a picture: http://www.powerlinecomponents.com/literature/detroit_diesel/v71_model_chart.htm (http://www.powerlinecomponents.com/literature/detroit_diesel/v71_model_chart.htm)
Some rebuilders use their own method of identification you never know where you will find the factory model and serial number some will be at the rear some at the front some on the small flat casting just below the head at the front and some have none if it wasn't re stamped after a rebuild that block covers a lot of different applications no telling what it started in life as
good luck
