Title: Battery separation inside battery compartment
Post by: basil on May 07, 2011, 10:39:42 AM
Is it necessary to provide an air gap between agm batteries inside a battery compartment?  My usage will be in warm to hot areas.

I am placing the batteries on the aluminum bay floor and surrounding them with plywood.  There will be ventilation through the gaps in the corrugated bay floor, and some vents at the top of the sides.

If you are asking if the batteries can be touching--I hope so.  Mine have been for years.

We have done it both ways.  We don't have the agm batteries though.  Our golf cart batteries are much happier with a 1" spacer between them than they were side to side.

What does "happier" mean?  In terms of batteries, now.

My experience is in telephone company battery plants and they always have a space between batteries.  Personally, I would like to see a space between any type of batteries for a couple of reasons.

It would help them to run cooler and you would be more able to see any bulging in the sides, indicating a problem.

Thanks.  I will add 1/2" spacers with room for air flow.
