A while back was looking for a trailer that I could use for kart racing. Well I traded my stacker for a nice 8x20 and $$$ that is fully equipped for my needs. The problem I have is, its got a vinyl wrap on both sides, well one side now after Susan and I worked 3 partial days removing it. I/we are dreading the other side for obvious reasons. The vinyl came right off but the residual glue was/is a bitch! Does anyone have a better and quicker way of removing this crap they call glue?
I have tried the following:
Sanding = gums up
Wd-40 = works but very slow
Scraper = needed for whatever you use
Goop off = waste of time
Sticker b gone = waste of more time
Prep all = (body shop recommended) junk
Easy off = didnt even touch it
Gas = works the best but you have to scrape and rub like hell
Anything else.... ANYONE!!!!
Not worried about the paint as its going to be painted anyway!
my guess is it's oil based....... how about keroseen or even baby oil....... Im surprised the easy-off didnt work, did you try spraying it with easy off and then wrapping it with plastic to let the easy off work longer?
I just went through that,, acetone will wipe it right off,, if you need stronger, then MEK.>>>Dan
I second the acetone! It takes a little work, but it does a good job. We have been using it since a sign man suggested it!

Most of the time I use acetone and there is another one, Xyol or something like that? Wear a respirator.
BCO
think about blasting it if your going to paint it anyway?/ or sanding. Might be less expensive in long run.
Really getting into the area of nasties. Do use a respirator. Another one you could try is lacquer thinner.
Forgot that I did try lacquer thinner and xylene (sp) both didnt work. Didnt try acetone so thats next!

Ace,
I've used acetone on every bus we've bought to remove the old lettering and get it ready to be re-lettered. It's not instant and requires some work but if you wipe it on heavy with a WET rag and them rub with the same rag after letting it soak for a minute it does work better than anything I tried before. (and I pretty much tried the same list of things you have!)

Try some goof off, (not the same as goop off) its awesome. Will remove paint form close that have been on the for a long time!
Acetone the way BK described and it will take more of it than you think.
Not sure it will work but may be worth a shot. If you have a truck wash near you, see if they can do an acid wash on it for you. I do not know if it will cut the glue...But I do know it will cut all the other junk off of it. Good luck.

Diesel works. Spray it on, let it sit a while then its fairly easy to scrape it off. Not a fun job by any means.
Klean/Strip EAD 908 will do the job for you cost 12 bucks a can, CRC has a product also but I never tried it 908 is a aircraft product fwiw
good luck
This is the best stuff I have found. Available at automotive paint and bodyshop suppliers.

They have a partner product that takes off the vinyl itself.

Tried the acetone and although the glue softened, it laughed at the idea of being removed. It smeared and yes I had the rag soaked!
Try a heat gun. Used on on a van we had wrapped. Worked pretty good.
Ok an update on removing this stuff they call GLUE!
Tried the mek... All that does is clean and smear. My boss called his friend who owns a sign shop and after explaining my situation, the friend recommended me to go Lowes and purchase a penetrating inhibitor that was orange, a gell and custrus scented. Only thing I found was "goo gone" and since it was a gell, and me working on vertical sides, I figured this was what the doctor ordered. He also advised me to start high and let it set for about 10 minutes then to scrape the glue off with a plastic scraper. Well let me tell you, the ONLY thing that stuff does is smell good. It didn't even think about dissolving the glue. Soo, what I did find that works and works fast is this...DON'T peel the vinyl off first, but DO scrape it off with a 4 inch metal changeable blade scraper. Once the vinyl is scraped off, wet a rag with plain old gas. Just rub easy in circular motions and the stuff from hell dissapears right before your eyes. If it appears to NOT go away, wet the rag again, really wet and it will almost run itself off.
I swear this is the easiest way I have found. I did half of one side if this trailer in about 1 hour compared to 3 partial days on the other side.
If I ever have to do this. again, I hope I remember this easy method, because I have almost a trailer full of cleaners, solvents, glue removers that I personally know will not work or should I say work fast and easy!
Thanks for all your tips... But mine is scrape first, then rub it off with a really wet gas rag!
What I would like to know is,,,, what kind of glue that stuff is because it must be only second to barnicle glue and I would love some. Mike.
I've had very good success using "Starting Fluid" and a semi rough rag to remove the glue and gum off.. If you are like most bus owners, you probably have a can handy somewhere.. just try a spot and see what you think..

there are so many different glues and finishes out there...today I removed clear coat using methyl hydrate...usually that doesn't work.....go figure. My arsenal is acetone, toluene (lacquer thinner), paint thinner and methyl hydrate. Usually one of them will work and hopefully not destroy the finish underneath, it's true that diesel and gas/white gas etc...have their place as well. I don't like using acetone and toluene as they are so VOC nasty nasty....been told that toluene even with a VOC mask will get you. You can't smell it through the mask but it gets into you,......scary!

All that stuff is scary! Like MEK leaches through your skin and collects in your liver FOREVER. Used to wash fiberglass off my hands with it before I knew what it was. But it did cut the resin. lessons learned... msds sheets folks, read and learn what you are using.

I worked at a powder coating place briefly and the guys that ran the spray guns washed the powder coat off with MEK every day and didn't think a thing about it. I wonder how many have liver issues or cancer.
