Title: Latest Alteration to Propane System
Post by: Lin on April 29, 2011, 02:15:12 PM
Awhile back I posted for suggestions about a problem with my propane system.  It had turned out that the large, double vehicle tank that was installed permanently only had a liquid port, so was not appropriate for the appliances.  I wanted to find a way to use it instead of pulling it out.  At one point, I decided that I would convert the gasoline generator to run on propane.  That would work by installing a water heated vaporizer just before the generator carburetor.  Although that was a perfectly acceptable option, I was not sure I wanted to make the switch.  Therefore, the pictures below show what we have done for now.

The horizontal tank on the right of the compartment picture is part of the double liquid tank.  The vertical tank on the left is a standard, removable 7 gallon vapor tank.  The tank that is in the middle is a floor buffer tank that will now be a permanent fixture.  The benefit to that tank is that it has a separate fill port and vapor port.  What happens now is that the liquid from the big tank goes to the buffer tank, where it flashes to a vapor.  It is then drawn into the system through the vapor valve.

I do not know if this is commonly done but don't see any problem with it yet.  I explained what I was doing to a guy at the local Amerigas dealer, and he said that it should work fine.  It is a little Rube Goldberg, but I am willing to accept that for now.
