Title: Left hand rotation 855 Cummins ?
Post by: 3408cat on April 15, 2011, 01:18:50 PM
I've found an old rear engine concrete truck that has a 855 cummins w/auto trans that has the starter on the right side of the engine unlike front engine trucks that are on the left side. Is this a left hand rotation engine ???  Anyone have any interest for use in a bus ? I was told that the transmission, Allison ??? was just rebuild before the truck was parked and the motor ran good ? I'm guessing its from the early 1980's maybe about 250 - 300hp.

They are right handed engine you see the starter on the right side on about all the Cummins generators and industrial engines,if he has the rear tandem drive from the mixer I know a guy with a MCI 7 combo that is looking for one

good luck

It an all wheel drive set up - the driveshaft goes to the front to a transfer case and then back to the rear axles.

Its a Tet - Advance    Big rears with super singles on pillow blocks and low gearing. The motor and trans are the only parts to use in a bus. I guess the idea of 855's being any good is a matter of opinion, unless you were thinking of 555's or 903's - (pure junk).

I've seen 855s with the starter mounted on either side depending on the truck it was in, all same rotation

Aw come on, what's wrong with an 855? Other than physical size...

You are correct about the 555 (triple nickel) and the VT903...now those were not Cummins best shot, but the 855 were industry standard workhorses for about two decades

If you were a driver back in the day, You had 238 Detroits w/10 spd or 318 w/13 spd, or Cat 1693's or 1674 w/RoadRangers, Mack 237 with twin stick and last but my choice 290 or 350 Cummins. All of the above without power steering. Everyone was tougher and more hard core. If you started driving in a gas job you really beleived 6-71's were fast.

I don't even like Cummins but the 855 was a tough engine smoked a little on start up when you got past that it was ready to roll, and believe it or not I owned a couple of 11 yd Wabco scrapers with the 903 and they never gave any problems but leaked oil at every seam lol

good luck

good luck

I thought any engine in a wabco would out last the electrical system? I cut them for scrap.

I only had the one. Brought it home from WV used it a couple years at home and sold it. No problems with the electrical I couldn't fix. Tough old bird.  Tom

I've got an Allis Chalmers 260 that I push with a IHC TD-25C. Great old machines that just keep going.

I have an 855 big cam 400 in my 05. These are tuff motors I have 90,000 on this reman. I drive it hard all day long. To this day it does not use a drop of oil between changes. Clifford is rite about smoking at cold startup. I over come this by hooking my Aqua hot to the motor so I don,t have that problem. If I slow down to 65 I can get 6.8 miles per gallon.

3408,

Of course you're right, I was thinking of the 903. The 855 series is probably one of the best engines ever made. I have one in my '71 Dodge 9000 truck tractor and have put many miles behind one in an Int 9670

If the motor in the rear engine concrete truck that I spoke of is not left hand rotation, does the transmission have a different gear set up that changes rotation direction ? Is there a way to tell what model Allison is in the truck if it does not have a tag on it ?
