Title: Any gotchas for replacing water pump o-ring?
Post by: belfert on April 10, 2011, 07:04:49 PM
I will replacing the o-ring on the water pump on my Series 60 in the next month or so.  Any gotchas I need to worry about?  I replaced the water pump when I replaced the radiator in 2007 and I obviously did something wrong with the o-ring at that time as it leaks oil around the pump.

I plan to start in earnest on my 2011 work on my bus just as soon as I get the windshield replaced later this month.  There are road restrictions due to spring thaw and I would rather not crack my driveway.

Hi Brain.

As I have said before, I am not happy that you a doing these things ahead of time and ruining our ability to watch your panic as you prepare for your big trip ;D ;D

I had hoped someone would jump in.  In lieu of that, I went to my Series 60 service manual and had a look.  In the book it talks about gear mounted and front mounted.  I assume yours is gear mounted (installs from the flywheel side of the front cover).  I also assumed that you are talking about the square cross section "O-ring" that seals the pump to the front cover.  If that is the case, it looks pretty straight forward.  I have attached a .jpg from manual.  If you need more from the manual, drop me a line and I will send you the appropriate pages.

I installed the o-ring when I originally installed the pump, but it is leaking more and more oil around the pump.  I don't recall if I put oil on the o-ring or not when I intalled the back in 2007.  I am thinking I probably did not do that.  Joel at the Choo-Choo Express garage in Chattanooga confirmed that the oil is coming from around the water pump.

Jim, thanks for the page from the manual.  I have both the Series 60 parts manual and service manual on CD, but I misplaced at least one of them.
