Title: Air compressor rebuild? replacement?
Post by: mumeo on April 09, 2011, 03:48:01 PM
I'm about to go and check out this large crown, and apparently there is a problem with the air compressor.

I'm hoping to take it apart and remove some engine gunk, and find that it kicks over great.  :)

failing that, however,   if an air compressor fails on an old bus like this (late 50's) what does it look like to replace it?   are there suitable compressors that can be rigged up to work?

anyone have any experience with this?

i checked the older threads, but didn't find anything that answered this one yet.   ideas?

Belt or gear driven and what engine makes no difference on a belt drive a Hall Scott engine gear driven maybe a problem  but not for the Cummins

good luck

Hey, maybe post a picture of said compressor?

Like Clifford said, other than mounting/drive/oil supply & return, the engine doesn't know or care what it is, and the air tanks don't either for that matter!

Most air compressors for engines are relatively cheap when exchanged for a rebuilt.  It isn't worth the time to goof with it yourself.  Find out what kind it is and just R & R it. Good Luck, TomC
